just realised the line that states 'GCF05=half-life 2 content.gcf' has a semi-colon at the start so its ignored.
so for anyone else wondering, just open steamemu.ini, delete the semi-colon at the start of this line:
;GCF05=half-life 2 content.gcf
and save the file.
then make a shortcut on your desktop, with the target reading like this:
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2\hl2.exe" hl2.exe -steamlocal -game hl1" |
Umm GCF05 is only for half life 2 content, while GCF07 is for half life 1. I tried changing the shortcut but it just lets me start a new game but with no available chapters to choose from.
There is no GCF07 because there is no "half-life source.gcf" file that corresponds to it. It's missing from this release.
I'm gonna try my luck with a separate HL1:Source release later.

yep yep.. i managed to play cs:source from the vengeanve dvd online..
got some errors on 2 servers..not authenticated,..some errors that theres a new protocol.. but not the same ones before "steam needs to be running"
anyways i used :
Counter-Strike_Source_ONLINEPLAY-EMPORiO
copied those files to the root folder "c:\program files\hl2"
while saving a copy of the file it wrote over.
then edited the SteamApp.cfg with "c:\program files\hl2" and login name and password to steam.
yes you need to make a steam account, login to steam setup an account, check off for autologin. this info is stored in ClientRegistry.blob
there u get the password and username. btw then just exit steam cause u dont need it to play.
then make a shortcut to cs:s, normal one is
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Counter-Strike Source\hl2.exe" then put -steam -console -game cstrike -heapsize 128000
after that line in shortcuts target so it looks like:
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Counter-Strike Source\hl2.exe" -steam -console -game cstrike -heapsize 128000
anyways, i have no clue if this is the perfect method considering the server updates to 7 and all that. But all i know is i managed to join a server i couldnt before doing this. Then it would just go back to the menu in half a sec
but all the others ive tried i get new protocol..
edit''the dvd version comes with protocol 6

I agree. But I don't agree with Steam EULA at all so the only way I can play the game without signing the EULA is to use the warez release. Too bad.

After playing both retail dvd and vengance release I must say I regret buying the game. It's sad really that Steam fucked this game. You should always feel something extra when you buy a retail product, the fact that you can play CSS online without any hassle, that you can just dl all updates without having to get a crack for them etc
But the only thing I fell now is I've paid for a product that works better if you leech it.
Plus you dont know what hell i went through to get the retail version working, had to format my HDD, rearrange my partitions, remove all my files just so I could install it on C:
Next time I'll think twice before buying a game with strange copy protection.

Half-Life_2_and_CS_Source_Protocol_v7_Update-VENGEANCE and Half-Life_2_Deathmatch_Addon-VENGEANCE works both perfect on and offline at cracked or normal servers.
My original goes straight back to the store cause of fucking steam.

Yeah for me too but anyone else experienced these "ERROR"-models in the downloaded crossfire map? They look like the one's which were in the leaked hl2 beta!

So basically I need to take/delete the original Vengance folder from the the first DVD realease and change it with this new protocol v7 version Vengance folder, correct? I was playing death match just now with no problems. Just wanted to burn a new DVD and just not sure if that's all I need to do to get it going/installed correctly again on another computer.
Thanks

ok just a quick question:
is the crack for this applicable to the retail dvd to allow me to burn a copy of retail and then use the Vengeance crack for my friend to play?
Thanks

Is it true that the gcf for HL2 that comes with this DVD is not 100% complete?
Thanks

No. And you don't get the gravity gun at the last level. You get it before you get to Ravenhold if I remember correctly. You get the super gravity gun at the last level that picks up anything.

I got HL Source .gcf ,but when I load it I noticed 2 things. First all chapters were unlocked. Second there were saves that I couldn't delete. These are due to the autoexec.cfg (that says sv_unlocked "19") and the save directory located in the .gcf itself. WTF? Is it possible to either add and remove stuff from gcf's or create new ones?
If not, that means that it came from valve this way?
