I have seen those nfo's from release groups where the movies is a dvdrip split onto 2 cd's each just under 700MB in size and they have AC3 5.1 sound at a bitrate each of 448Kbit/s now 160Kbit/s is a lot less in number but does it sound as good? anywhere near to what you would expect from the actual DVD?

The simple answer is most definitely not. Of course not.

The more complicated answer is it depends on the source and the equipment you have. If you have a cheap equipment and you encode a quiet and compressible soundtrack, you probably won't feel the difference.

160 kb/s is about the minimum you'll need for mp3, anything lower and you'll start to notice...

you say 160kb/s you need for mp3, but I am talking about AC3 5.1 sound? These release groups have released movies AC3 5.1 sound at 160kb/s all fitted onto a 700MB CD. How is this possible?

160 for AC3 us seriously bad, and for 5.1 no less. If you want to go with low bitrate 5.1, you'd want to go with either AAC or OGG.

I just used that program called media info as I got a h.264 dvdrip which is 700MB in size. I read the nfo and it said it has 160Kbit/s 5.1 sound. I used VLC first and right clicked and went to audio and saw it only said 2 channel stereo the movie uses. But the nfo said 160Kbit/s 5.1 sound. Then in media info I got these settings

complete name
Format : MPEG-4
Format profile : Base Media
Codec ID : isom
File size : 698 MiB
Duration : 2h 2mn
Overall bit rate : 796 Kbps

Video
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High@L2.1
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames
Codec ID : avc1
Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding
Duration : 2h 2mn
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 634 Kbps
Maximum bit rate : 1 868 Kbps
Width : 656 pixels
Height : 272 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 2.412
Frame rate mode : Constant
Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Resolution : 24 bits
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.148
Stream size : 556 MiB (80%)
Writing library : x264 core 64 r988 41c9e22

Audio
Format : AAC
Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
Format version : Version 4
Format profile : LC
Format settings, SBR : Yes
Format settings, PS : No
Codec ID : 40
Duration : 2h 2mn
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 159 Kbps
Maximum bit rate : 233 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Rear: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 16 bits
Stream size : 139 MiB (20%)

It says under audio 6 channels, Now does this mean it's not dolby digital 5.1 sound but AAC 5.1 sound?

Which then means the sound won't work with my dolby digital 5.1 sound system?

I cannot test as my system isn't setup right now.

In order to play this AAC would I need a sound card that can play AAC surround sound as well as a set of 5 PC speakers and a PC subwoofer? Is this all correct?

The movie quality is incredible, I tried it and it's just as good as all other dvdrips made and really does look like it's dvd quality.

Sorry for all the questions, I hope you can help

Many thanks in advance

The file you have has AAC 5.1 audio and should work with any 5.1 speaker setup as well as any 2 speaker setup (though you won't hear all channels, that's why VLC said stereo).

Since you can hear the audio you already have an AAC decoder (ffdshow, etc.).
So connect and setup your 5.1 sound system and you should get the full 5.1 experience.

Generally, AAC at a lower bitrate sounds just as good as AC3.
Try Nero AAC encoder and use VBR mode with q=0.25 to 0.4 for multichannel and q=0.35 to 0.45 for stereo.

Visit the Hydrogenaudio forums for a lot more information on AAC and audio encoding.

Many thanks for your reply

But I need to clear some things up with you, my surround sound system is not a PC system. I got it 10 years ago and it has a DVD player built in. The only sound it does is PCM and dolby digital. So I take it that it will not work with this AAC sound?

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the built-in system you're referring to but most likely the DVD player won't be able to play AAC.
If the speaker system could be connected to another player that plays AAC then that might work.

How do you connect your sound setup to the PC that will play the movies? Because if you decode the AAC on the PC and send PCM to the sound system, it will work.

what does FFS mean?

So all I need to do is decode on the PC and send it through PCM to the sound system. Well my usual setup is I have one of those surround sound USB thumb sticks which have a optical out that goes from my laptop to the optical in of my DVD surround sound system. This way I could decode the AAC on the laptop and then send via PCM, but how do you send the PCM what software do you use?

FFS = For fuck's sake. As in a few hundred bucks on a decent receiver and speakers every 10 years isn't too out of line, FFS Wink

Then you could even encode the sound on the fly to DD (using AC3Filter for example).

Wow thanks for that awesome reply

I guess with this ac3 filter I can now encode DTS 5.1 in DD 5.1 in real time. This means I wouldn't need a new compatible DTS receiver. Thanks man.
