Leafs fans have been referred to as the stupidest people on earth (for good reason) for constantly supporting a team that has not given Stanley Cup hope in over 40 years. Scientists theorize that fans are stuck in a "DUR" state of mind due to brain damage from head butting each other with cooking pots on their heads (known as "leafing"). There is also evidence they inject themselves with blueberry juice in order to get this 'blue blood'. The fans also feel that people are better when they wear the Leafs jersey. They claim that they get powers that increase their abilities in everything. Such claims are seen to be mostly poppycock.

We still have won the most cups ever. we are the dynasty team of the NHL...the only reason we havent won a cup since 67 is because of the fuckin owners. the arena sells out every game every year so why bother making an effor to win the cup? assholes...

He should have known someone was going to put a hit on him. Sometimes getting the puck isn't as important and protecting yourself.

Kostopoulos sincerely regrets hit on Van Ryn
Dave Stubbs, Canwest News Service Published: Tuesday, November 11, 2008

MONTREAL -- There are people in this world who, upon being caught breaking the rules, express a profound, phony remorse. Mostly for having been caught.

And then there's Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos, who would like nothing better than to rewind his life 72 hours or so and be one stride slower racing deep into Toronto Maple Leafs ice.

Kostopoulos on Tuesday night sat out the first of his three-game suspension for having driven Toronto defenceman Mike Van Ryn into the Air Canada Centre end-board glass on Saturday, leaving his opponent sidelined with a concussion, broken nose, broken bone in a hand, a lacerated forehead and damaged teeth and gums.

Kostopoulos skated Tuesday morning, remaining on Bell Centre ice long after most teammates had taken their game-day leave. Then he spoke with the media for what might have been the longest 10 minutes of his life, replaying the check that cost him three games and nearly $33,000 in wages.

It was a hit that he hopes will not brand him as a cheap-shot artist.

"I wish the whole play never happened," the 29-year-old, seventh-season NHLer from Mississauga, Ont., said quietly. "I'm not a dirty player. I hope Mike realizes I didn't mean to hurt him or run him from behind. I meant for it to be a clean check and it ended up in a bad situation."

Kostopoulos has tried unsuccessfully a couple times the past few days to call Van Ryn, but has made contact through text-messaging.

"It was nothing bad," he said of the brief exchange, without elaboration. "I don't know if he wants to speak to me now, but maybe in the future I'll try to call him and explain what happened. Right now, I just wish him the best and hope he gets back on the ice because he's a good guy, a great player."

In fact, Kostopoulos and Van Ryn know one another reasonably well; they have shared ice for summer hockey.

The Canadien admits he was surprised by the length of his suspension, saying "in my mind I know there was no intent and I never meant to hurt Mike. I don't play that way."

In a disciplinary hearing held by phone on Monday, Kostopoulos says he tried to explain to NHL hockey operations director Colin Campbell "that I was trying to finish the check and once I saw Mike's back, I couldn't stop."

"I thought suspensions usually went on intent, and I knew in my mind there was no intent to hit him from behind or hurt him. I thought it would be less, but there's nothing I can do about that now."

In its announcement, the NHL declared Kostopoulos a "repeat offender," a ridiculous label when you consider his only other suspension in a 309-game blue-collar career was a one-match ban for instigating a fight in the final five minutes of a game last Nov. 17 against Boston.

The fact remains, however, that Kostopoulos wiped out an opponent Saturday with a thunderous hit from behind, having expected Van Ryn to cut left behind the Leafs net before he turned his back and angled right, directly into the path of the rushing Canadien.

Komisarek addressed the split-second decision-making, saying of the forechecker that "all your momentum is carrying you forward and all you're thinking about is knocking the defenceman off the puck and creating a turnover.

"Maybe a step later, it's a good, clean hit," Komisarek said. "But (Van Ryn) turns his back, his face goes into the glass and he gets hurt. You hate to see things like that, but the physical aspect has always been in the game. Things happen really quickly."

The last thing Kostopoulos wanted, apart from injuring Van Ryn, was to be sitting on the sidelines as he battles every game for a precious spot on the roster.

But he was seeing a broader, more important picture Tuesday - he said he won't change his rugged style, but perhaps now will give a defenceman an extra heartbeat to commit to a direction before laying into him.

"For the kids out there, you don't want to see anyone hurt, even if they're on the other team," Kostopoulos said. "Play safe and play hard, but don't hurt anyone.

"Any kids who are watching know that if you're the person chasing the defenceman, you have to give him maybe a second or two to make his move before you ride him out."

seems sincere enough to me ...
