what benjeremy says makes a lot of sense except for the part of about poison pills, but then again it doesn't necessarily have to make sense. MS isn't known for being a good wholesome mom and pop company. they could easily pad some companies projected losses to "aid" them in weeding out some pirates, adding fear to the "scene", or whatever their ultimate goal might be in doing that. that scenario seems stupid too, i will agree, but bottom line is we dont know what they are up to or how EXACTLY they are catching us.
look at it like this - you know any game that's gonna be released is gonna be pirated whether it is before or after the release date. as far as a developer is concerned they are gonna lose money to piracy one way or another. as he said, whats the difference between a renter and a pirate? it's a fine line for sure and an argument that has no end, i.e. - stealing is stealing combated by "but i wasn't gonna buy that game anyway, how did they lose money from me stealing it?" so MS could easily say well if you are expecting xxx amount in losses due to piracy, what if we give you that and some more to plant a "poison pill" 3 days ahead of it's release date, or a week, or whatever... then the poison pill idea doesn't seem so illogical after all. crazy and unlikely? absolutely, i will agree, but just another way of looking at the situation.

argh, still people with the conspiracy theories! How do you tell Bethesda:
"I know you've been working on your game for years and years, and you've spent millions of dollars on development. But, to catch a few pirates, and to piss off your loyal customers, we want to release it 3 weeks early so that your hype is butchered and you lose sales (we'll also have more pirates than before)....oh yes, and you gain nothing and neither do we."
Riddle me that. It's popular...that's why it was leaked early. Likely from someone at the manufacturing facility. Consider that all these games leaked after they went Gold.

think you test your connection.
when it gives you those codes you are banned.
if it gives you other codes than the normal Z youarebanned codes you should be fine.

Well look at it this way how much money are they going to lose? per year by banning pirtates who pay monthey or yearly subscriptions to live......each day?
then estimate that over the next 1 to 2 years.

Banned now with the last 3 hours, was fine earlier, accidentally played the review version of Saints Row (wouldn't have played it if known it was a review version), hadn't tried any of the other known don't play games online but do play connected to online and download updates and such......

I got the same thing I believe.
I was playing Forza online just earlier and now I get thrown out of live when I play anything.
I am signed to live while on dashboard tho.
// now dashboard kicks me out too.

I'm tempted to just install the nxe beta now seeing as I can't get the update next week, one thing that worries me though, is it possible that the beta will somehow expire and the console becomes unusable because it's not possible to go back to an earlier xbe or to download a new one with being banned?

YOU WILL GET THE UPDATE. ALL X360 GAMES CONTAIN THE DASHBOARD INSTALLER. GAMES RELEASED AFTER NOV. 19TH WILL COME WITH NXE AND PROMPT YOU TO INSTALL WHEN YOU INSERT THEM IN YOU CONSOLE
Hope this clears things up.

dezztroy wrote: | The thing about MS planting review copies of games, is just bullshit imo. Someone I know is a reviewer for a site, he got Saints Row 2 early to review it, and he could play on Live with a retail 360. |
Think about what you wrote.
Your reviewer friend got a retail disc to review.
The supposed "Review copy" of Saints Row 2 bumps the current Live member off of Live while the game is playing, does not rack up achievements, and has different graphics. The first issue with that release is different from your friend's version.
I would suggest that your friend simply got a retail disc before the shelf date.
Not all reviewers have Dev Kits, just those that Microsoft deems important enough or those that have the money to plunk down on one. Early "review" discs are sent out on DVD-Rs with unsigned code, right from the developers.
As I stated before, and I do know what I am talking about, unsigned developer images cannot be played on retail Xbox 360 consoles, modded or otherwise. It's a no-brainer for deveopers to send reviewers (who have dev kits) early versions to try out, since the only people who can make use of those images are people with dev kits.
Microsoft is not going to go through the trouble and expense to prep a retail-capable image before they press the production run. There's no point unless it's getting pressed, and pressing a disc is a very large investment, especialy considering the security features that have to be incorporated into retail game discs.
Ergo, the supposed "review copy" released, oddly enough, exactly a month before the ban wave, is NOT a review disc, nor is it a retail disc.
Now, brainiacs, why would Microsoft prep an image capable of running on modded retail Xbox 360s if it wasn't intended to be pressed into a retail release?
I can only think of one answer.

I probably should clarify my terminology a bit....
There are three basic "classes" of XBox 360 consoles....
1. Retail Console - any Xbox 360 console you can buy in the stores. Only runs signed code.
2. Debug/Test/Review Console - The "Black" Xbox 360 (Not the same as the black retail one that came out eventually). It runs signed and unsigned code. It has a VGA port. It is intended to run code from DVD-Rs that developers create for beta testers and reviewers. They can be remotely debugged, code can be stepped through, and you can even develop on these machines, but it has more limited functionality than...
3. Development Console - Much larger than your average Xbox 360, it looks like a 360 on steroids. Larger hard drive, it also has the VGA port, and other connections. This is the primary workhorse for developers. It also has additional memory "legroom" for deveopers running large amounts of debug code.
Type 2 - the "Debug Console" is the type that is commonly available. There are very few of either of the dev kit consoles available, and they are costly.
What do I mean when I refer to "unsigned" vs. "signed" code? Before it is pressed into a retail disc, the executable is processed with a "private" signature key which results in a unique signature. This signature can be verified with a "public" signature key, but only the possessor of the "private" key can make valid signatures. The executabe, incliding the "Media Flag" cannot be tampered with, without altering the signature. When a retail Xbox 360 opens an executable, it verifies the signature is valid before running the game. Any tampering causes the executable to be rejected. If the "Media Flag" does not allow the media it resides on (Pressed XBox360 DVD-ROM, DVD-R, Pressed DVD-ROM, Hard Drive, Flash, etc...) it rejects it.
The "Private" key is a very tightly held secret at Redmond. We never figured out the original Xbox key, let alone the new one for the Xbox 360. Developers cannot "sign" their code. They must submit their code to a rigorous certification procedure, and when Microsoft is satisfied, an image is prepared (Media flag set only to the "Xbox 360 Secure pressed DVD-ROM") and the code is signed.
The reason only you can play backups on the Xbox 360 right now is because the backups embed data recovered from the security features, and the hacked firmware pretends the DVD-R is actually a "Xbox 360 Secure Pressed DVD-ROM" and returns the embedded data when the console prompts it to query the security features. The signature still needs to be intact.
