Some countries do have a bit of tax added when purchasing from Steam, unsure how it's set up or handled but the game costs about 56 USD here which is still about 30 SEK cheaper than purchasing the retail copy (Not really a difference and I already have all other source titles on Steam anyway.)

Can't say how it works for "gifted" purchases though.

Wow, I knew it was 25% (Standard tax on pretty much everything here - "Moms".) but I didn't know that made this country top-ranked in that comparison chart.
(Tied with Denmark but I think they have somewhat better economy over there.)

Well as long as the Steam price isn't much over the retail price (They're pretty even as I mentioned.) I won't complain about it and at the moment there aren't many titles with that kind of price on Steam.

Steam prices should be at least 30-40% lower than getting box/dvd and delivered to your mailbox instead of being MORE expensive.. i always check Play first and, so far, it's always been cheaper to buy it and get it sent to you, so it's not like a one time thing they're doing.
I DO think Steam is great othwerwise (i've purchased several games over steam) but the prices are retarded.

With people like Glottis defending those fuckers, prices will probably increase instead of going down, sad..

Steam client update released

Improved startup time (omg about fucking time, takes 5 seconds now instead of ~30)

WAY overpriced. The orange box was only 50 dollars when it came out (now its 40), it contained much more content. Fifty dollars for something that is barely a mod is ridiculous.

hmmm...better get valve complete pack if you don't have steam games
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1134
$99 before taxes is a good deal, although 3-4 of these games are considered playable now.

Wrong. The only time Steam can ever charge tax on any purchases, gift or not, is when this purchaser is making the purchase in the same state the Valve is headquartered in (Washington, FYI).

They are setting their prices to maximise profits.

The most desperate people will purchase at $45/50 no matter what.

Then they will reduce the price to milk the next consumer segment and so on.

Desperate? LMAO. More like people having jobs spending their money how they wish. No one was forcing me to buy this game but I bought it, and I really didn't buy it because I'm desperate. Are you sure you know the meaning of the word desperate?

im sitting here staring at the PILE of games I have to play and trying to figure out what to play. . . I am far from desperate. But, i didn't think much about plunking down the dough for Left4Dead. Just like i went and plunked down $599.00 for the new Fuze cell phone over the weekend. . . but thats another story.

Bad choice of words.
What I meant was people who really want the game. They will be willing to pay the initial high price.

You know, honestly, after I got The Orange Box for$40 at launch, I don't mind paying Valve $45 for this one single game.

I daresay I feel like I owe them a solid after that incredible bargain, so I think this will just about even the score.

The files I've experimented with from the full versions pre-load content seems to work but the EXE file itself appears to be encrypted and using the demo EXE didn't work.

Can get a unpacker for those VPK files as well.
http://blog.gib.me/2008/11/14/left4dead-vpk-extraction-tools-now-with-ui/
(Models, textures and such.)

EDIT: Sound files seems encrypted as well actually, tried playing one of them.
(Mostly tested the files in the VPK archives.)

I thought the point of STEAM was to eliminate zero-day piracy. Why would there be releases already?

Indeed, though I think a role reversal in pricing would have been more palatable.
