@ Clcancellation: Mussolinka is right, i played myself for a couple of hours now with friends online over steam.
Its easy as everybody say, install steam, put left 4 dead in steamapps with patched engine.dll and play it over steam.

both from both wahoyaho, Clcancellation about engine dll not working i still cannot say but as far as i know 80% of people on this topic say it works, even on other torrent sites they claim it works, the other 20% havent figured it out. i´ll buy this magnificent game now that Psikobare cleared my doubts but first first. time to shut steam biatch with engine dll.

Someone explain to me what the big fuss about this AI director is? I played the demo through about 10 or so times - the only thing that changed each time was the point at which a mad rush of zombies would come at you.
This "director" simply materializes mobs off screen and has them rush at you - what's the big deal? The level layout doesn't change, the weapons/health are bound to one of two or three places every time you play.
Am I missing something here? |
I didn't really see a lot of variety in the demo either, then I played the full version through and I was getting the feeling I was being gypped. However play it some more, especially with different people (who play it differently) and you'll start to notice more and more variety on offer.
Clearly Left 4 Dead is a brainless shooter - so the variety isn't mind blowingly awesome - the AI Director is a fancy term for a spawner with somewhat sophisticated rules. That being said, the more you play the more you'll appreciate it (especially when custom maps come out and it's so easily implemented on top). You have to play it a fair bit in order to see this - I know because I originally had the same opinion as you.
Ultimately, it's doing what Valve said it would; setting the pace, maintaining a challenging difficulty without ever turning things impossible - generating highs, and lows. The key thing is not to jump to conclusions as the more you play, the more you'll notice. |

You have to have steam though installed to get the game online, which it's mainly meant for.

Had some fun on extreme a couple of hours back.
Well that is until the guy we tasked on guarding the stairs for the last stand in that farm decided to high tail it to the truck when he saw the Tank coming up the stairs.
I have no idea where he ran out since the three of us were busy shooting back the hordes of infected from the hallway so we each had our doors to guard. I finish clearing my assigned room and I get thrown to the wall and pummeled by the Tank. I die, and then the Tank goes for the other guy. The third dude in the party got strangled by a smoker and got mobbed by the horde.
The guy using Francis meanwhile was already in the truck.

Yes Valve is quick at fixing hacks like these that allow playing online without buying the game.  |

Even if they use empty account with hacked steam client there's a hug chance to get the real account banned as well. It happened to many people using hacked steam clients.

Alright can someone hear me out here. I put everything in my steam folder as indicated, replaced engine.dll but when I load up steam I can't see Left 4 Dead in the "My games" list. Am I missing something?

That is exactly what happened to me last night. I was playing Mercy on Advanced with 3 unknowns. We were on the top of the hospital waiting for the helicopter. I was in the stairwell behind the minigun emplacement. A new horde came after we had just killed the TANK for the 2nd time. I was killing horde when I noticed I was all alone. I looked over the horde I was shooting and saw the helicopter. I ran up the stairs to try and start making my way to the helicopter but didn't even have a chance. I was overwhelmed immediately. Louis was already at the heli and didn't even say anything like THE HELI IS HERE! Nothing! LOL! All of us had microphones too. 3 of us died and he made it. Great game! But just goes to show you how important communication is. Not sure why they didn't say anything. I think you really need to play with friends or they just don't give a shit about you. LOL!

Your case sounds like a lack of communication - not that he didn't care. If you don't have mics, or even use the text chat - then there is a lot of assumption as to what players are doing and what they will do (at least with randoms). Doesn't mean they didn't shed a tear as they flew away, watching as your carcass was being passed around from zombie to zombie

It's good, but I think the third party mods are going to be much, much better. Valve really didn't add anything special to the maps. It's basically walk here, walk there, defend this area, then escape. In the game it's obviously a lot more intense and exciting than it sounds - but there is no variety or puzzles and so on that could have easily been implemented. So is the campaign any good? Yeah, much good, but not as good as it could (easily) have been |

What the hell, this game's price is horrendous.
I mean- it costs 140złoty (~45 dollars ) which is a lot to me.
The funny thing is, The Orange Box(so HL2+Team Fortress2+HL:EP1+HL:EP2) costs like 33 bucks.
Oh, the times when dollar was 2,2 złotys, please come back. ;(

yeah on play.com the box version is like 20 odd pounds lol. and yet on steam its near enough 60 bucks again with vat added ... scary.. and im not buying into steam with that sort of pricing really..
