ASUS A8N-SLI 939
AMD64 X2 4200+
3x1024 MB PC3200 DDR
EVGA e-GeForce 8600 GT 256mb

Main use for computer is HTPC, internet, burning x360 games, work shit, etc. Not a single game installed any more. Only peripherals are HP Laserjet 1002, external HD ... also using onboard sound (only using passthrough to my receiver anyways) ... so I don't see any issue with driver compatibility.

I've been running Windows XP for a long time, just wondering perhaps if I should make a switch to Vista, if only so I can become more familiar with how it works.

Any real drawbacks given my PC? What release of Vista is a good one to get?

get another stick of ram and get x64 ultimate. And shut off any services not needed.. I didnt like 32bit vista at all, 64 bit runs really well with 4gb+ ill be hard pushed to change this os for time being.

Well, Im not as technical as some of the guys on here, but I have Vista Premium Edition x32 (i think anyway) and it works fine. Havent had a problem with vista since i bought this comp. So a year and month now.

But hey, I dont know all the tech aspects, I just know how it preforms based on my experience.

I think that's the one I have, works 100%. It will sort a auto install the OEM hack after 1st boot so don't get alarmed if it reboots automatically after 10 sec or so.

I however later applied the "Vista Loader v3.0.0.1 clean Bios Emulation loader".

You can get it at Antiwpa after registration (Cheers LEO for the heads up and all the hard work)

The reason I like that one is that I get an ASUS logo in the Welcome Center in VISTA .

Logo of your choice Wink.

AntiWPA and KezNews are really enough to get you going with proper cracks.

well I just bought another external 500hb HD for $85 so I had enough free space to copy everything off of the OS drive (250GB). Downloaded that BIE release, formatted the HD and it took about 30 minutes for me to get on the internet after I started the install. Everything seems pretty fast Smile

Now to start over with re-installing apps Razz

Oh, and maybe a stupid question ... what about genuine updates from windows? I could do it in XP ...

No problem so far with all the cracks, and it seems no updates in the foreseeable future will be problematic.

turns out that vista realized I had 2 different outputs, the 2.1 in my den (output through the front headphone jack) and the toslink output (digital). I just switch between them in the audio options Smile

Actually that works better than in XP when the type of audio decided the output (DTS/AC3 = passthrough, mp3 = internal decoder --> computer speakers)

So I still can't get vista to detect the spdif output.

funny this is, it still plays but is only passing through stereo to the receiver. ac3 filter says that it is disabled as well.

Anyone have any ideas? Pretty much thinking it's time to roll back to XP. The computers main use is HTPC which = fail under vista so far.

so I guess next question is, what is the best XP release to get?

It happens because your Vista is 64bit, while AC3 is a 32bit filter. The solution can be found here:

http://ac3filter.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=377

BTW, it would have behaved the same way in XP64. Wink Cheers!

maybe I should have installed 32 bit vista to begin with ... problem is I can't load any 32 bit codecs with MPC x64 ... even FFDSHOW x64 installs into the x86 program files folder and MPC does nothing when I point it at the external filter...

You sure you have ffdshow64? Try this:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=173941&use_mirror=garr&filename=ffdshow_rev2477_20081211_clsid_x64.exe&99545838

My ffdshow64 installed in the Program Files...

But yeah, on the topic of x86 vs x64, when it comes to media and file playback, 32bit is still the way to go, so I have discovered in the few days I have Vista x64 installed. It's not because it's not capable, or because it lacks some features, but because of sheer ignorance from the developers. In many cases, they just say "I can't be bothered to redesign the thing to take advantage of 64bits, and recompiling it just for 64bits is pointless, so I won't do it at all" which angers me tbh. There are some cases where the apps/codecs are created on Linux, and there is still not a stable, free cross-platform 64bit compiler, so another problem there.

cheers man, that install of ffdshow seems to work ok Razz the one I had was ffdshow_rev1328_20070706_x64 so I'm not sure what it's problem was :/

apparently they are working on a new core avc 64 and haali 64, but ffdshow audio + video + MPC x64 internal audio switcher should do for now Smile Anyways, off to watch La.Femme.Nikita.1990.720p.BluRay.x264-SiNNERS ... which was the goal about an hour ago Razz

aww fuck, well looks like my cpu can't really handle 1080p .. guess I really do need hardware acceleration to work.

I take it this is the release to get for 32 bit?

There's a December release by BIE, so get that. Smile

BTW, you can use MPC-HC, it supports hardware accelerated for 1080p stuff encoded in L4.1, and most of all, it has an x64 version. Wink

ahh... ok I was using MPC-HC x64 but I didn't realize the internal filter supported hardware acceleration.

That seemed to fix the performance issues... so maybe I will stick with x64 after all...

Very Happy Cheers man!

BTW, how much RAM does the machine have? What made you put the 64bit version in the first place?

Haha got you. Well, yeah, with a 3GB it wasn't really worth it, but it's more future proof, if you decide to pop more RAM in.
