It is good enough for a tryout. It's not a bad game in any respect, you might just feel like it feels like every other RTS out there.

But the setting and story are good enough to give you a good run, nothing wrong with using a tried and true system.

I think this game is plenty of fun.

Its a nice game. Sure its a Warcraft ripoff, but I dont care. I'm sure BFME will be dissappointing because of EA Pacific, so why not try this game?

So, given the choice of Kohan II or Armies of Exigo, which would you say is better?

I didnt play Kohan II very much. I never started the campaign, but I'll go for AoX. Its a more traditional RTS than Kohan. The graphics are superior to that and it runs more decent on my pc Very Happy (P3 1ghz, 384mb, 128mb Ati Radeon 9550SE)

PostPosted: Fri, 24th Dec 2004 13:21    Post subject: How to beat the city defense mission in armies of exigo
Thats the toughest mission i played yet and i am in the 3rd Fallen Mission. The game gets better mission to mission, but the defense mission is a really pain.

First: Build 3 or so towers outside the south gate, to the left where one stands already. Build them in a vertical row. Fill them with rangers. Then order your catapult to bombard ground exactly in front of them, so every attacker that gets close to the towers will be bombarded. The will come there, and dont go inside town, because the towers shoot at them already on their way up to the gate and makes em angry. This way the south gate is at least 15 minutes safe, without losing too many units.

Second: Concentrate with as many units as possible at the east gate. Healers and many bowmen. 4-5 towers. Pull together the strewn crossbowmen. You can buy crossbow mercs at the tavern next to Del Rai.

Third: The last minutes hell breaks out. You HAVE to pull back to the center of the town. Have the catapult attack ground exactly SE of it, down exactly in the way the enemies come. So you get at least a huge bunch of enemies down each hit. You should have some towers there too with 2 peasants and autorepair attached to each. Buy tons of crossbow merc and put everyone for defense to the opening west of Del Rai.
Watch for trolls who will attack Del Rai and make him die 2-3 minutes before the game ends (a real pain). When trolls show up, hit them with the catapult directly.

I made it with all my units down and tons of ogers punching at Del Rai, last minute...but with this tactics it should go way easier.

I have played Kohan II single player and the Armies of Exigo single player demo.

Which is better is ofcourse your own taste. I can however tell you a little bit about both. First off, is AoEx a warcraft clone? Well yes, it looks like it. But this can be bad or it can be good. I think it's a good thing. The game looks very good and has a nice feel to it. Gameplay is smooth and everything seems to be in the right place. You need a pretty good pc to play it at max detail/high res but overall I think the game runs pretty good. Since the demo only was one mission I cannot tell you anything about the campaign. So far the only downsides (for me) are the lack of originality. Also the underground map thing is cool but it's hard if you are busy at both levels. Base upgrading (which i like) is basic, but that might have been just the demo mission.

Then Kohan II. Kohan has some nice features, like the army point system. This looks like other games but actually works quite different. You have few army points but a lot of options to fill them in with your squads. You can mass charge with cheap troops or assemble your own deathsquad. Negative point here is that the assembling of your own squads does not work very good. Since the enemy keeps attacking you do not have enough time to tailor the right squad for the job, so you'll end up selecting standard troops anyway. Performance is quite poor on most pcs. The engine is quite heavy and does not produce very nice images. However it is good enough to keep up with other games of this genre. The campaign is OK, nothing new, I got a bit bored with it after about 10 missions because the goal/objectives are always the same. You basically just have to destroy your enemies base in every mission. Gameplay is OK, it has a few bugs that might annoy you sometimes, maybe they won't annoy you at all. You can upgrade a lot on your buildings and troops, I like that. I only didn't notice much difference when fighting enemies with upgraded or not upgraded troops.

So far I would go for Armies of Exigo. If you don't mind that it looks like WC3 then this can actually be a great game to play. It seems the most "mature" and playable. If you are looking for a little bit different RTS then go for Kohan, but there is a 50/50 chance you'll like it or not.

Glad i could help. I hope the community for this game grows since its so much better than warcraft (for my taste). Rippoff? So what? There were alot of things i for my taste didnt like in wc3 and exigo makes it much better. If you like speed, fast games, play wc3. If you want deeper, longer gameplay with more tactical options, play exigo.

I find everytime new features, like the harvester for the fallen (a crap-kind-of-thing) can actually grab and hold enemies so they cant be hurt but cant fight also. So i tried a new tactics by taking workers with me to the front and actually it works! You take out spellcaster in the rear by grabbing them until the melee units are goners. Bad thing is, the crabs take slowly damage by the wiggling enemy they are holding.

Or the dryad that has spells that work from underground upwards, so u can walk under the enemy base and cast thorns to the surface. Or thorns from above to underground...or the builders of the fallen that can take control form (immobilizing them) but you can build more units while they are like that AND they can see above and underground in that form...

Well not forgetting the cool story that keeps me motivated to go on.

Can you say i love that game?

Merry xmas all!!!
