Renaming the EXE won't work as that'll cause LIVE to fail and thus the game won't start at all, plus there's two EXE files though I'm unsure which one is the launcher one and which one is the game EXE.
(Both stay open after starting the game as well, if you alt tab and close either one the other closes as well.)
Might be possible to rename a bunch of files to get LIVE working again though but I've no idea how well that'll work.
EDIT: Main EXE is obviously "GTAIV.exe" as the Live files are tied to it with "LaunchGTAIV.exe" being the launcher responsible for starting everything.
(Both start the social club application so it needs to run as well before you can enter the game.)

Yea ati has probs with crappy drivers. BUT if it wasn't for ATI, YOU'D still be paying $600 for a GTX280. Nvidia is the problem.

I answered that a page or two back, there's three configuration files in a folder inside the "My Documents\UserName" or "User\UserName" (XP or Vista) but they're encoded or encrypted or compressed or something else so can't be viewed or edited, everything will have to be done in the actual game.

obviously when they put gf8600 as a recommended gpu in systeqm requirements and 4870x2 can't play it properly on PROPER resolutions it's a lying and can be treated accordingly in courts.
the ongoing "Vista capable" case rings any bells? M$ has already lost so far, next appeal in february afaik
yes

Wasn't the 8600 MINUMUM recommendation or was that even lower?
(Ofcourse what IS the min and recommended settings anyway, "min" usually means lowest possible though req can be a bit vague but I see it as a balance between lowest and highest - medium perhaps - especially as certain devs or publishers try to trim them a bit.)
EDIT: I'm nowhere near skilled enough to work with actual code, I learn pretty quick but I'm no guru or programmer, most is just self-learnt from what I've read from others or experimented with myself.
EDIT:
Oh and the X2 card is basically two 4870 cards on one board but still relies on Crossfire to function properly (For the two GPU's with their 1GB of RAM to work together) and Crossfire (And SLI) require up-to-date drivers with optimized and correct profiles for the latest titles (That's how most of them are recognized, via their EXE filename.) in order to provide decent scaling and enabling certain techniques and options (Such as forcing AA in Oblivion for example or AA in UE3 titles to name two recent ATI tricks)
When this doesn't function you basically work with a single card configuration so right now the X2 works as a 4870 with 1GB of RAM so it's actually no wonder that the 260 or 280 or even the standard 4870 card is currently a bit faster.
(Same with proper SLI/Crossfire if there's no active profile, it won't work well at all most of the time.)
As Epsilon said you can either rename the EXE filename to one that the current driver "knows" in order to force enabling those things (Can cause issues) or you can enable certain optimizations to try and force it anyhow.
(Catalyst AI handles this for example and will try to work that way when set to "Advanced" however this can cause visual glitches and even display artifacts or crashes as it also tries to optimize performance in various ways.)
(Most of the time though there's a very subtle difference between Catalyst AI on standard and with it set to advanced, turning it off disables Crossfire scaling on a X2 card altogether though and isn't recommended, unsure how it affects normal crossfire.)
Again though that's mostly from what I've read from other sources.
For ATI this should correct itself in the 8.12 (Obviously it'll also help single cards like the 4850/4870) or at worst the 9.1 drivers, NVIDIA probably already have proper profiles set up in their latest drivers which is the 180.60 or 180.70 CUDA beta drivers. (180.70 being reported as a bit more recent but also a bit buggier.)

Anyone from the US or Canada willing to buy the game for me at Direct2Drive?
I will pay in advance and a total of 70 dollars over paypal, or whichever you prefer. In return, I want my email address to be used during registration and checkout and I'm only interested in those who are trusted around here and with atleast 1000+ posts.
PM if you're interested. Thanks. =)

I dont think its gonna take that long. this is a massive, major title! crackers must be creaming their pants at the thought of rls'ing this first.

it's the first game that go to use the live with online activation. this sucks anyway. dead space or red alert 3 or warhead don't use live. i guess that a crack is hard to do just for this
