I think the reason a lot of PC gamers are experiencing poor performance is because, like PC gamers typically do, they all went and tried to max out the settings, which R* did not mean for people to do.

Explain the random crashing then and the lack of an AA function Smile
How about the lack of soft shadowing which has become an industry standard for games like this?

Some guys already said in the previous page that lowering the settings still doesn't allow for smooth gameplay.

Try appending this to your gta shortcut
Code:

-nomemrestrict -norestrictions -percentvidmem 100 -texturequality 2 -renderquality 4 -detailquality 99 -shadowdensity 5 -viewdistance 50 -width 1920 -height 1200

replace as you want, as it is noone will be able to run it like this, the nomemrestirct, norestrictions and percentvidmem are the most interesting by far Wink
Oh and that renderquality 4, is not possible through the game menu as far as I can tell 3 is maximum that translates to "very high" 4 translates to "highest" Might give you reflections on cars and whatnot.

Anyone tried appending '-noprecache 1'?

Someone claims it boosts performance.

But then I have to wonder what's being pre cache'd.

It's pretty damned taxing when you have the draw distance drawing nearly the entire game world at once, and the traffic density about 4 times higher than the console version.

I'll give it a try at those settings, will be interesting to see what happens.

EDIT: Renderquality is possible normally by the way, "highest" is the setting I use.

Cool Smile
I had constant random crashes, installing .net 3.5 fixed them for me

Apparently it's an issue with an old msvcrt60 that doesn't get updated through sp1 or the vcredist package.

Turns out the game crashes if I try to push everything to the highest.
(That 10 error screen, can't remember the full name of it.)

Also found out that the view distance slider nearly cuts the performance in half going from 25% to 65% (Which is the highest possible the game allows without using those command line parameters.)

Windows Vista x64 here, .Net 3 installed by default, updated to .Net 3.5 a while ago and now to .Net 3.5 SP1 with the previous batch of Microsoft updates. Smile
(Game requires it to work as it's included on the disc, 3.5 that is, probably doesn't need SP1)

Seems to be related to the resource usage as well as it doesn't crash unless I go above the previous max settings. (Everything else can be pushed to highest but view distance won't go above 65% so now I left it at 50% which still looks great and performance sees a nice little boost as well.)

EDIT: Removing the -nomemrestrict command let me push everything back to 100%
(Looks pretty good and not that big of a performance decrease over the previous 65% view distance.)

EDIT: Seems RESC10 has to do with the game running out of available video memory.

First thing people fail to realize is that nvidia hasn't released any drivers for this game YET. So before you complain lets all remember that nvidia has released drivers in the past that have shown significant improvements in new games. So before any gets upset they should probably wait for nvidia. nvidia users just hang on I am sure they will get a graphics driver out that helps a bit. Rockstar should have been working with nvidia anyway, but either way we have to wait for a patch from them, and nvidia to see anything "improve".

Again as Immunity stated in this topic, if you own an ATI card, then you have no right to complain.

What? I can't complain about shitty game optimization?

It's not nvidia selling the game. Why must a person wait for their 'fix' before he can enjoy his purchase?

just install the game from your games in steam,
the installer will automaticly installing the key.
i did the same,
the game is unplayable for me, framerate from 1 to 20 highest.
i think its has something to do with the nvidia drivers.
it doesnt mather if i play on highest settings or on lowest or even in some menus without playing the framerate is 20 fps.
i think whe just haveto wait for a fix or new nvidia drivers.

Quote:
THE GRAPHIC SETTINGS OF GRAND THEFT AUTO IV PC

Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.

Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised.

Video Mode
Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality
Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality
Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance
View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.

Detail Distance
Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.

Vehicle Density
Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance

Shadow Density
Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.

Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

NOTE: Background Processes
Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans (especially “on-access” type scans) when running the game to maximize performance.

So apart from this running poor, have anyone checked on the modding capabilities? I know it's kind of early, but what are the possibilities of modifying/hacking the files? Or does the game seems like it's a closed box?
