Everytime I run the game, the graphics options are reseted to default, I hate that, any idea? I think is happening from new nvidia driver (the one for GTA4, version 180 something)

update your windows;

2. XP 64 bit - SP2
3. Vista (both) - SP1
4. install .net framework 3.5 and SP1 for that.
5. update all the vga drivers, it really helps.
6. read this topic very carefuly, most of the questions are already answered.
7. It works and is playable.

Thank you for reading.

(and three posts after this one will be: "is there a crack yet" or "is SP3 really needed"

Works with XP 32bit SP2 too.

To fix the graphics options resetting I had to delete the old files first.

They're in the "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV" and then "settings" folder, should be three files, delete them and restart the game and adjust the options to what you want, exit the game and re-check if they've "stuck" by restarting the game. Smile
(Folder also holds the saves and custom music.)

In XP that would be something like "C:\Documents And Settings\UserName\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV"

I believe that's one of the known bugs. (Invisible/missing objects or textures.)
Link

Another link to Rockstar Studios support website, might contain some information about the problem.

1. Since you didn't tell us your system specs it's difficult to help you.

2. If you use settings that requires more video-ram than you have available you may have missing textures.

Been playing this quite a bit the last few days, worked before now and then with the first few cracks out after a little messing around, though it was a bit tempremental, now using the FeD0R loader its fine.

About the game, it's such a relief to get something great to play at last, was majorly dissapointed with farcry 2, though dead space was decent i guess. Never played the console version so GTA4 is all new for me.

A lot of complaining going on about graphics and performance and im sure some of it is justified, like the issues the poster a few above is having, but personaly im impressed, for the ammount going on at once, in an open world with no loading when going indoors it is good. The only major flaw in my opnion is the lack of AA support.

Playing with E8400~4ghz, 8800GTS(512mb), 4gb Ram (up to 98% used ingame which is great to see) and vista 64. Getting a good steady fps around 35, very playable.

Using settings...

Video mode: 1680x1050
Texture quality: medium
Render Quality: highest
View distance: 34
Detail distance: 60
Vehicle denstity: 100 (amazing with so many cars)
Shadow density: 3

Nope, look at my rig, I'm playing it on 1024*768, texture: low, rendering:highest, view distance:10 car density:50 shadow:max object fading:100 and I got the same FPS if I would play on MIN.

It should run faster, and better on your computer.

i had the same problem (bad performance)

but i also had some kind of 178.xx drivers installed Very Happy

it is very important (!) that you install the latest nvidia drivers. that gave a MAJOR performance boost for me. it's now actually playable in 1920x1200 here

You're right it's faster, but I think it should run faster than it does on every rig.

I have 2x quad core (8 cores) 4x280's 12GB memory and I run the game with everything on Low/1280x1024 and get 50FPS!!

Yes, that was a joke...a system like that (which doesn't exist) can only get 50FPS out of IV....I haven't been in the comedy business very long

visualSettings.dat has some interesting things you can change like reflection and bloom but if you alter it, the game won't lunch.

Maybe there is some way to bypass it.

I really don't know what the F word is wrong with GTA 4.It runs like crap even if you have a good system + the recommended settings say that you need a 512 MB Nvidia 8600 / 512 MB ATI 3870 video card but when you move up the slider on draw distance it exceeds 1GB of memory on the video card !?!? Then why the F#@K didn't they put in the recommended settings a 9800GX2 or 4870x2 cards?

I think they just pointed at two different computers for the minimum and the recommended, and said "okay, maybe these will be the specs, hope our shitty port will make it".
