20 easy steps on how to install gta 4 (original):

Ok, I've been pretty lenient towards the online activation of PC games lately. If it means I get to play an awesome game, I'll put up with it, and have been urging people to do the same. But this may be because I've only come across good ones so far, like Dead Space, that checks the disc once for 2 seconds then never bothers you again.

Leave it up to good old Microsoft and Rockstar to spoil that run.

GTA IV for the PC has just taken anti-piracy protection to the next level. To demonstrate, here's a step by step process on how you can start - not play- the game:

Step 1: "Tut" loudly as you are forced to agree to be part of the Rockstar Social Club; a Gamespy type program that must be installed before you can install the game.

Step 2. Wait for it to validate your DVD. Begin to install the game. It comes on 2 DVDs, taking up 16GB's of space.

Step 3: Growl loudly when asked to make a Microsoft Live account. If you haven't done so, be prepared for an arduous task in itself. Begin to cry.

Step 4: Wipe tears of frustration from eyes. Unclench jaw. Finish installing the game.

Step 5: Start crying again when you realise you must now make a Rockstar Social Club account. Do so while chanting a mantra of harsh words (language choice is optional).

Step 6: Go to email account to find validation code. See no email. Break something within arms reach.

Step 7: Ask website to resubmit code. Eventually find it in the junk folder. Consider offering Satan your soul to end the pain. Click validation link.

Step 8: Choose whether to assign your Xbox, Play Station or PC Microsoft Live account to the Rockstar Social Club. Plot assassination of Microsoft Live creator. Choose account.

Step 9: Attempt to sign into account as requested. Check watch: it's dinner time... but didn't you just eat breakfast?

Step 10: Finally finish creating Rockstar Social Club account. Sigh with wary relief. Start Social Club program.

Step 11: Speak in tongues as the program updates. Make a pot plant spontaneously combust.

Step 12: Rejoice as a big splash page with the word "Play!" appears. Click it with tired optimism.

Step 13: Bash head against keyboard repeatedly after seeing message stating "Please install the new Windows Live Update". Feel the beginnings of an ulcer forming.

Step 14: 22MB later, install update. Rock back in forth in your chair while attempting the "Play" button again.

Step 15: It works! Hooray! ....right? WRONG. Activate the game again by entering the code on your manual. Wait for it to su****iously validate you. Feel slightly violated when it finally gives you the OK and starts the game.

Step 16: Begin to worry when black screen lasts 5 minutes. Alt + tab a few times. Remove fingernails from fingers due to over ambitious biting.

Step 17: Menu words! At last! Proceed to graphics options.

Step 18: Consider hiring Chuck Norris to roundhouse kick Rockstar when they tell you “You can not set the graphics higher as your system lacks resources” when you not only have enough resources, the benchmark test runs crystal smooth.

Step 19: Sigh, write it off as a bug. Begin game. Hooray! GTA IV at last!

Step 20: Game crashes to desktop.

---------

I hope you find this guide useful. Funny thing is, while I was installing it I was thinking "Wow, wouldn't it be funny if I went through all this, and then the game crashed to desktop! Haha!"

And then it happened. I wouldn't say I actually laughed. I made some kind of noise, but my girlfriend said it was definitely not a laugh. Hmm.

For the record, the game will not start if you don't play it through the Rockstar Social Club, whether you're interested in playing online or not. Suck it, single players: go buy a PS3 or 360 if you want easy access. You gotta keep the DVD in the drive at all times too. What is this? The 90's?

Pah.

F**k you, Rockstar and Microsoft! I'm off to join the anti-anti-piracy software crusade

Its more time consuming reading your post than actually logging into the game and playing it as you have written...Its not really that painful lol, I mean if you have not had a live signup etc before ok its a small chore but not bad is it ? If you have you do it once heaven forbid..

Still its only annoying I would say for those that dont pay for it, as one paying for it knows what they are getting into as it states whats needed to play eh Razz

Well I apologies for accusing you of this crime then Smile

90 1 stars on amazon so far, overall grade 1 1/2 star, even the 5 star review states the installation is a nightmare, this is turning into another ME/bioshock fiasco, here is a rare positive review:

"This is quite possibly the greatest game I've ever played!

In GTA4 you play the role of Lee Gulpurchaser, a guy freshly back from a computer store with a new computer game. Upon arriving home, Lee realizes that he's been likened to a low-down computer-game pirate and is finding himself on the run from obscene digital-rights managements software, an impossible software activation regime, and an incompetent user-support system. Wrongly accused, he's on the lam while also trying to get back in the good graces of his family as they're wondering why he's changed into a different person, shirking his familial responsibilities trying to play a game while also randomly shouting obscenities.

I've only played the "game" for about three hours, but so far I can say that it's possibly the greatest experience I've ever had. I just completed the reinstallation mission, you know, the one where you install it again to see if there's something keeping you from enjoying your game. It took me at least three tries to get through that mission for some strange reason, but the cut-scene after it gives a lot of exposition so you'll know what you're in for, game-wise.

Probably the hardest mission in the game is the one where you have to navigate the phone directory at Rockstar's tech support. It's a normal, straight-forward mission: you pick up the phone, press a string of numbers, and speak to a live person. What makes the mission so tricky is that you find yourself in a never-ending circuit of pressing a given key sequence, followed by a lengthy bout of being placed on hold. Combine that with the fact that it's a timed mission as if you're unable to complete it in 45 minutes, the mission ends as the main character gets too aggravated to keep trying to get help. I haven't yet completed the mission but I hope that I can soon as I'm sure that the subsequent missions will be equally as challenging and entertaining.

One of the nice things about GTA4 is that there are a lot of side missions. One involves collecting information to determine if you have some substandard computer causing all of the calamities. So far I've gathered the 8800GTX badge, the standard Pentium-IV and Intel motherboard setup items, all of which seemed like it would be rewarding. Of course, none of this actually helps you to complete the game, as it's really the core missions -- referred to in-game as "the game's over-protective, over-restrictive installation is what really keeps you from playing it" missions -- that govern how far along you progress in the game.

I'll try to write a follow-up review after the next mission, the one wherein Lee packs the game back up and returns it to the computer store, telling them that regardless as to whether or not he gets his money back, he just doesn't want to deal with it anymore."

So is it worth wasting the club key on this game's multiplayer? How does MP work, does it have dedicated servers, or are 32 player games hosted on shitty home computers with 56k connections? I saw a few youtube videos and MP didn't look too exciting. Unlike others I only have two keys so I must be very careful on what game I use them. Maybe someone could write a mini review on mutliplayer, thanks.

I had some fun in mp but I have not played all variations of it yet.. Just a general team deathmatch thing, still it was amsuing rocket launching peoples cars when they were driving so fast they take off into the air when you get a good hit on them lol..

Maybe hold back on using them for now incase xmas brings something more intense that is more worthy of a use.

On the console MP was/is a blast. I dunno about performance on the PC because of servers, but the game itself is really great.

Driver News
We’re pleased to announce that in co-operation with Nvidia a new driver has been released that improves performance and fixes a major issue with 7900 series cards. If you haven’t gotten the driver yet download it here: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_gtaiv_downloads.html

ATI has also agreed to officially release Catalyst 8.12 which will release on Dec 10th from http://game.amd.com. Expect significant performance improvements when using this new driver.

Patch Is On The Way
We are working on making a patch available in the next few days. Since Grand Theft Auto IV is a Games For Windows – Live game the patch must be certified by Microsoft before release. The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval.
The patch contains a variety of fixes including:

-A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.
-Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays
-Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice
-Fix for ATI 1900 shadows
-Overall savings to memory
-Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors
-Multiplayer character settings are preserved
-Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch.

Issues with power management software have also been fixed (slow speed, double speed issues). Even after the patch comes out setting power management software to maximum performance is recommended. We’ve seen cases where power management software does not detect the game is running and puts the CPU in green mode.

Besides the patch we’ve also improved the way the Social Club handles data this should have greatly reduced or eliminated the Mma10 error. If you are still receiving this error after logging in and out of Social Club we would like to know as much info as you can about it.

I like how people react to the stuff you do in the game but talk about over-reacting.

EDIT: And what's up with Roman's tit-obsession.

EDIT: Napster, IKEA and some others.

(Seems the Napster one disappeared, it's "www.shitster.de" in the web browser.)
