Doom 3, imo, had even better graphics than hl2... Its a very good game but its a shame that it gets boring after a while

Doom3 was a tedious, repetitive and uninspired game. Boring, too dark and repetitive - it really shows what a good developer can do in contrast to this crap. Look at Call of Duty, HL2, Painkiller, Prince of Persia2 - etc.
id redefines the term 'MONSTER CLOSET' with stupid zombies predictably popping up behind you and out of nowhere. over and over the same old thing.
id does not make good single-player games. period.
I'm not sure what engine is better, but the tired satanic crap that id keeps regurgitating is getting very old. However, the doom3 engine in the hands of Raven should make Quake4 interesting.

I wish the whole game was like the first part. You know, bright. Without those nasty spider things. I loved the game up until it got dark, and then...it was dark. I actually didn't mind that so much, but the rampant darkness combined with spiders, made me stop playing. God, what a pretty game when you came out of the darkness to see the plasma torches and everything. The presentation is great, the gameplay is not. Unfortunately. I really hope someone mods a no-spider patch
HL2, on the other hand, only had one such slow, annoying part. It's entirely too long (Ravenholm), and it's irritating, but the rest of the game is good to great. And the physics engine is too. The multiplayer is the best part, though. And with the mods on the way, they will probably dwarf HL2 just like HL mods dwarfed the first game. Good times, good times.
So yeah, unfortunately I guess I say HL2 > Doom 3. I like id a lot more than Valve, but at least Valve finally did a NoCD with their latest update, so retail buyers don't get punished anymore.

you may think that Doom 3 has better graphics than Half-Life 2, take a screenshot of each and put them side by side and sure Doom 3 looks better, but Half-Life 2 has the better game engine. that counts for more than graphics
think about it - Doom 3 is shiny, but thats about it. almost everything in Doom 3 looks shiny. lighting used to great effect, beautifully drawn environments, but the world doesn't react in anything like the way it does in Half-Life 2 - you don't even get bullet holes in the walls in Doom 3!
(i used to argue with my friends a lot about Unreal Tournament vs Quake 3, i liked the translocator, the game modes like Domination and Assault, and the way the weapons in UT all had 2 functions, my friends had to concede on those points, but always brought up the fact that Quake 3 had better graphics. i had to agree it looked better, but thought it lacked something in texturing that left it looking way too shiny and 'polished'. and Doom 3, using the Quake 4 engine, seems to have the same problem)
anyway... yeh i found Doom 3 way too repetitive as well. its very atmospheric and great fun as long as all you want to do is shoot things, but i just cant play it for very long at a time, i get bored. but that doesnt stop me from coming back later to do a bit more. worth borrowing or downloading, not worth full retail price for the few hours of gaming that you're going to get out of it.
at least it wasnt as bad as Painkiller. all that consists of is walking into an area, door shuts behind you, door out of there is shut, enemies appear, you kill them all (albeit with unique and fun weapons), doors open, move into next area, repeat. very linear and repetitive, i got bored of that quicker than Doom 3
Doom 3 a bad game? no, they hit what they were aiming for, shooting lots of monsters. unfortunately it didn't quite end up like the original game (not enough monsters), and it doesnt have the depth that modern FPSs have. i'd say the expansion will be worth a try at least

engine wise, doom 3 engine is much more technically advanced than the source engine.
The games on the other hand may be visa versa

As "Bet" mentioned above about spiders, I can't play games that has an enemy, creature or anything else that looks like a spider. It just freaks me out. In Half Life 2 when I encountered the first hadcrub i said to myself, "Now that looks ok" and the way they walk was kinda funny so i had no problems with it, untill I encountered the second type of headcrubs which moves faster and looks more like a spider. That "Ravenholm" level was pain ine the arse for me to go through but I managed to do it.
I didn't try Doom 3 yet so I know thats going to be worser. Any tips, help, or advice is welcome regarding this "spiders" issue with me. I think i should open a new thread about this, I'll see how it goes.
And about the expansion pack, I haven't really played Doom 3 yet so I can't comment on what they should improve etc.

I dont think so. the physics engine and facial animations in Doom3 isnt as advanced and i never even saw any water in Doom3. It's also supposed to be a corridor shooter and doesnt handle big areas very well, source can handle both.. so no..

I would also have to disagree here because the doom 3 engine overused bumpmapping on every surface including characters which made it look very unrealistic. The diffrence is that the source engline uses bump and normal maps because having a bumpmapped character looks like crap. Also, the source engine is designed to run on many more computers so you don't have to have the very latest technology to play the game. In doom 3 it seemed to run out of a story line and just cover it up with many halls of darkness which was very boring.

Lol, i remember when i first played D3, damn i was so sure i was going to buy it, but instead of buying it first, i was planning to buy a new 3d card, so i could really enjoy it. Thus I had to wait a week or 2, 3 for the card to arrive and in the mean time, do it with the gay GF2. Considering I only played D3 for an hour or 2, i didn´t really know how the game was overall. So after i got my 3d card i was one broke motherfucker, no matter i still had D3-reloaded- to play, so i started playing again and soon i found the game getting repetetive, really repetetive, man, i still thank god for buying the 3d card first, as i saved myself 50 euro, the SP is mediocre, and the MP sucks.
What's really ironic to me is that i once saw a post which read: "Doom3 is just another shooter" and at the time i could only think "god how gay is that person", but after all he was right. Only thing good about Doom3 are the graphics, the rest has been done before, it brings nothing new, such a disappointment.

both games are boring
and i wouldnt support a company that produce a medicore games
ok HL2 sold good but the game is still dissapointing IMO
and yes D3 is just another shooter but the GFX kicked ass and
D3 has a more of an athmosphere than HL2
but HL2 wins because it has a better engine but its still just another shooter

Doom3 was a nice game but not great...
HL2 also was a cool game(better than Doom3) but not great...
two games share one common thing which is that originals were all great at that time.

I think your wrong there cloud. Your right about Doom3, it's a nice game to burn some time but it's not super game, even with groundbreaking gfx.
But HL2 WAS great. It has so many new stuff, it opend a new world to FPS games.
Everything from smooth animation, to weapons and back to storyline. HL2 is the top of the FPS games.

Youre a moron! the orwellian atmosphere in hl2 is as good as it gets, d3 was fun but way to dark and repetitive.

i cant believe nobody responded to the typo in the topic.
it's "expansion" and not "expantion".

I would'nt mind a HL2 expansion: some more monsters, some more weapons and more fun... yeah, that would be great

More Doom 3 Expansion Details
The January issue of Game Informer magazine has a bit more information on Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, the upcoming expansion pack to id Software's first person shooter remake. (thanks PlanetDoom)
RoE takes place two years after the events in DOOM 3
You play as a different marine this time around
Sent to assist Dr. Elizabeth McNeal in investigating a strange beacon on the planet
Betruger sends three demonic hunters after you when you discover a weapon known as the "Artifact"
When you defeat each hunter, their abilities are transferred into the Artifact
The abilities resemble, berseker, slow-mo and invulnerability and are all "stackable"
Roughly one half to two thirds as long as DOOM 3
Having the story revolve around two characters may bode well for co-op |
