I LOVE YOU. I can now run the game with Medium textures at a maximum resolution with a reasonable view distance, before I could only have my max resolution with Low textures and virtually no view distance.
Better performance, nope, but game looks 100 times better now. THANK YOU! |

It's called a memleak. Restarting the game will give you another couple of hours of smooth play.

Average FPS: 57.59 |
Which means it runs at like 35 FPS in-game since the benchmark doesnt have pedestrians or traffic (R* where obviously well aware that the game performs like shit and used this "rigged" benchmark that isnt as demanding as the game itself).
I have 54 FPS average in the benchmark and the game is playable (about 30-35 FPS average in-game - about the same as the 360 version) but it's still laughable that it performs like this imo.

Syco, thanks for your guide! I'm going to try this today or tomorrow. Maybe I'll be able to play the game on 1920x1200 now.

You can change the benchmark scenario & other stuff, instructions in readme file.
I´ve been tweaking this for two weeks, tried almost everything, and still can´t make it playable, even at 800x600 with all the sliders turned down it runs like shit. Nice to see some of you can play it properly...

Ok i don't get it working.
First i have a 8800GTS 320mb (which the game sees as 302mb), so to get a litte bit more memory for the settings i put in -availablevidmem 3.0.
Then i have 889mb to play with the settings.
I set the resolution to 800x600 75hz.
Texture to high (yes i know, i only have a 320mb card)
AF (or whats it called) to high.
Every slider too 30.
Shader slider to 0.
Now the game says i use 762mb.
Now it gets confusing for me, the manual says 650/1024mb, but is the 1024mb from the example the actual vidcard mb, or the mb set through the -availablevidmem command?
In both cases:
- If i divide 762/889 = 0.86 (rounded) (889 being the "fake" memory setting ingame)
OR
- If i divide 762/302 = 2.6 (rounded) (302 being the unmodified memory setting ingame)
So i tried both settigs seperatly in the commandlines.txt
First:
-height 1024 -width 1280 -availablevidmem 0.86 -noblank
* I go to options game says 255/260mb, but the resolution matches the commandline setting of 1280x1024 and not the 800x600 thats in your posted manual. And every setting is on the lowest setting.
Second:
-height 1024 -width 1280 -availablevidmem 2.6 -noblank
* I go to options game says 762/786mb, but the resolution matches the commandline setting of 1280x1024 and not the 800x600 thats in your posted manual. And every setting is on the as i put it in.
What did i do wrong, because the manual says:
Quote: | If all your settings looked right and it said 800x600 but was clearly in a higher res. Then you did everything right, if not, go retry. |
Well it didn't, where did i go wrong?

Don't bother with that shit, its fucking retarded. If you check his thread you can see that its one of 3 scenarios:
1) It doesn't work, it usually reverts to your res with everything on low
2) It works with no difference in frames
3) It works and you have a frame rate increase, but you also have messed up texture popup and other graphical issues.
All 3 are a waste of time, it takes so much restarting and playing with command files that its not worth it. Heres the thing: Nothing you configure in the commandline files will fix this game, the only fix is from Rock* putting in the time to patch their fucked up port.

I just tested it. Well, it allowed me to play 1920x1200 with mostly smooth fps, but the shadows turn to "OMGWTFLOL" bad So I will probably go back

Yeah, I dont think its meant for rigs/cards like ours dude. I was gunna try it, but my game has everything max, on a high res (not 1900 but high enough) and everything runs fine so I didnt bother trying it out. Why mess with the game when it works fine already ya know?
But I figured it might help some ppl so I thought i'd post it.
Its on the GTAForums site but its buried in all the threads there and I just happened to stumble across it. So I put it here for us nfohump guys. That way, its easier to find if you need to use it. You dont need to spend 30 mins looking for it.
Its more for medium to lowend cards i think. Rigs and cars like ours dont need to do it.
I have the legal version and since I patched, the game runs completely fine.
But still, they need to optimize it way better and put more load on the gpu instead of the cpu. Thats the one big flaw I hope they fix. Cuz fuck, if its optimized, it will cut down the resources need and then I can devote more resources to my gpu.

Test if the autosave still functions and you should have saved every now and then via the "safehouses" just to be sure that you had a recent save.
That said, I'm at a similar situation myself where I'm kinda stuck and will probably hold off with the game for a while.
(U.L paper - driving that helicopter is close to impossible.)
Hacked X-Live DLL file.
http://blog.gib.me/2008/12/16/hacking-grand-theft-auto-iv-part-ii/
Helps when modifying the EXE for trainers or similar and probably when hooking the game via other tools. (Game usually crashes when using TexMod for example due to LIVE detecting something hooking to the EXE.)
Obviously this might cause problems with MP gaming so don't use it for that.
(Same when using trainers, it'll be detected and you'll get banned.)
