LaunchGTAIV.exe links to Paul.dll (From what I know, might be wrong.) and is part of the protection method (Right click and choose properties then digital signatures, should say SONY DAC), works like a loader and starts GTAIV.exe (SecuROM activation.) once everything has been verified.

LIVE is also needed and so is the Rockstar Club social application program but that's already been mentioned a ton of times.

Bit cumbersome to be honest and it's more work and effort than necessary in my opinion.
(Leave the Social Club program built into the game EXE and not as a stand-alone application, preferably tied to the mobile phone as a sign-in for MP gaming, should be the same for LIVE but MS paid quite a bit of cash for that feature. - Also remove the LaunchGTAIV exe and use only GTAIV.exe, would be nice to remove the disc check and just keep the activation, would cut down the start-time a bit and wouldn't need two programs running - one for each exe file that is.)

Thanks JBeckman.

This is retarded, messy job by rockstar.

I have Far Cry 2, with the same protection and it doesnt need to have any ms-dos window open.

After installation of the game I have copied Razor's crack then updated the game (without launching the game before). My friend did everything in the same way and he doesn't have this problem but yes he have almost totally different PC including Vista x64 etc..

My PC is:
Vista x86, 2GB RAM, AthlonXP 3200+, 6800 GT 256MB ForceWare: 180.84, Asus A7N8X Deluxe

Your processor and gfx card are way under the minimum requirements. Does the game run at all or does it crash from the start?

The graphics card supports SM 3.0 but it'll be a bit slow, unsure if the processor supports SSE 3 though as I believe it's required by the game.
(Or perhaps that's SSE 2, bit unsure when it comes to things like this - would explain why it crashes though.)

I can't even run Social Club. So after clicking LaunchGTAIV.exe command prompt window appears and after that I get this crash. So it can't be because of gfx card because in this case game didn't even started..

Uh... stop exceeding video memory? Rolling Eyes

There's a reason that video error occurs. So either stop using "maxim um settings" or get a videocard that has 2GB of memory.

I have 4870X2. It is 1Gb per core, not 2Gb, there is now 2GB video card (for gaming). I'm not the only one, how is playing with -norestriction and maxed settings, but haven't heard of any other problem like this ...

doesn't crossfire work in a similar way to SLI and even though you physically have 2GB of VRAM, the data is replicated on each of the cards memory.. so thats 1GB of data max your card(s) can store and use.

Ryzen 5 5600, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II, Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 32GB 3600MHz C16, MSI RTX 5070 Ti Ventus 3X OC , Corsair RMx Series RM750x. AOC AGON AG324UX - 4K 144Hz 1ms

Exactly. You have 1GB mirrored VRAM, not 2GB. The game, at maximum settings, requires closer to 1.7GB of vidmemory -- which is 700MB more than you have -- which is why you're getting issues.

This just seems like a very bad video memory management... There are games that look much more impressive with much higher draw distances and more complex scenes (graphically, not city simulation stuff which is done on the CPU and regular RAM), and none require such insane amount of video memory. Just bad coding it seems.

Yup. The game is poorly coded trash. It may well look better than the 360, but I'd rather pay that and not have to deal with the port.

Honestly I would love to know what was going through the guys over at rockstar's heads when they made it so only a super high end card or a SLI/CrossFire setup is needed for the game to run properly. Thats also assuming the SLI/CrossFire setup atleast has 1GB on each card. I think its safe to say that most gamers probably have a 512 MB cards.

There is no doubt that they knew this was unacceptable and simply didn't care and released as is. Does anyone here even have a setup that can max this game out? If so I can't imagine it running to well even on such hardware am I right?

It's clear, that the amount of memory is small. The problems is, that there is many, many people playing with maxed settings(with norestriction) on video cards with even smaller amount of memory and there is no problem at all. The other strange thing is, that i'm around 30%, on the first Packie mission and i can't pass it, cause it crashesh every time. So far i had the this problem, but after 2 or 3 hours of playing. Now for 15 minutes and bang - out of video memory.

The settings are a bit inaccurate as well, I have to be in the green range of memory usage or I'll get that RESC10 error after playing a bit even though the game supposedly only uses 600 or so MB out of 1GB total.
(Game can use over 3GB of system RAM though so that's another possible cause of this error.)

Not that it matters much as view distance doesn't alter all that much after a certain value.
(Mainly smaller objects in the horizon, stuff on top of those low-detail LOD buildings and such.)

Regarding the patch only one has been released so far and there's no news regarding a second update but there are still quite a few bugs and issues.
(I'm losing achievements now and then for example due to how the game syncs with LIVE, memory leaks also seems to be happening and there's a lot of other problems reported on the forums.)

SLI and Crossfire works somewhat with the latest drivers (ATI 8.12 and NVIDIA 180.xx - unsure about NV 181.00) but the game doesn't scale very well from what I've noticed (Crossfire via a ATI 4870X2) and it seems the same is true for SLI.
