as you can see on the forum sabin im with you on this one, but I have hope. And you can see that a beta is going on if you look in the xsos group in the forum. Instaling his early version xsos 2.02 right now.

There's always hope, but I see XSOS "3" as the OS equivalent of that PhysX hack for ATi cards. Only a "close group" of people have ever even seen it ... and the only proof is a handful of screenshots, any of which could have been easily manipulated.

Well, XSOS v2 was a modded and updated Win2K installation, I can already sniff Vista in XSOS v3.0. It's just fake.
I'm more interested in ReactOS which is a REAL product.

It is a modded Windows 2000 with all the "bloat" removed. All files are (c) MS, no one else. This is warez pure and simple. It would be a bit different if it were like BartPE or nlite, where there are only tools that allow the user to create his own XSOS ISO from an existing Windows CD, but instead they're distribute toe Windows CD directly, which is illegal. |

Yes, but XSOS is Windows 2000 and not a separate OS, ReactOS is coded from scratch and is for real. You'd be better off installing Windows 2000 with all updates.

As for an OS that actually works now (it's not Windows, it's not Linux, it's not OSX) and that has been coded from scratch since the mid-90'ies, I'd go with SkyOS. I've followed it since 2001 and it's an impressive piece of software, especially since it's basically a single (but brilliant) developer that have developed it. In last couple of years more people have joined the team to do work on translations and categories outside the core.
Spoiler: | |
Quote: | SkyOS is an operating system written from scratch for x86 PC's. As required for a modern operating system, it supports features like multiprocessor support (SMP), virtual memory, memory protection, multitasking, and threading.
Filesystem
The native filesystem used in SkyOS is SkyFS. This 64-bit journaled filesystem supports modern features like attributes, indexes, and queries. To access other operating systems' native filesystems, SkyOS comes with FAT12/16/32, BFS (BeOS), Ext2/Ext3 and ISO9660 (CD-ROM) filesystem drivers.
Internationalization, Localization and Translation
The entire SkyOS GUI and core system supports UTF8. From the time you press a key on the keyboad (UTF8), to the final step (rendering UNICODE TrueType characters), all text and characters are handled in UTF8. Because of this you can type and view text in any language, such as English, German or even Chinese.
A built-in translation system makes it possible to translate applications very easily to other languages. Language switching works "on the fly". This means that immediately after you change the language settings, all applications are switched to this language.
The primary language for the SkyOS GUI and native applications is English. Out of the box, the GUI and most applications have a German translation as well.
ISS (Integrated streaming system)
The ISS is a very tightly-integrated sound and video system, which makes it very easy to access the audio and video multimedia services of SkyOS, while still providing a very powerful interface. The simplest way for programmers to allow their application to play an audio/video file is by simply calling the ISS_PlayFile function with a filename.
On the other hand, you can create extremely complex audio applications by using the various functions provided by ISS. For example, you can create two audio streams, one stereo, one 5.1 DolbyDigital, connecting an echo filter to the second, associating the 5.1 stream with a SB Audigy live and the stereo stream with a basic stereo soundcard, and apply various software digital filters to individual streams.
Graphical user interface
The graphical user interface of SkyOS (SkyGI) is very flexible and powerful. Full theming and skinning is supported as well as really nice graphical features like:
* Desktop composing
* Mouse gesture visualization
* Alpha blending
* Transparent windows and alpha blended windows
* Window shadows
* Rounded windows
* Free form window shapes
* Window animations
* Optional OpenGL rendered windows
* Antialiased truetype fonts with font kerning
* Support for BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG and ICO out of the box
* Various themes like WindUI, Classic, Revolution and BeOS
* Supports Windows (tm) .RES resource files in seperate files or embedded in applications
* Supports application translation to any language
* Widgets: Button, Checkbox, ClientWindow, ColorSelectDialog, ComplexEdit, Dialog, Dynamic bitmap, Edit field, FileSelectDialog, FileView, FontSelectDialog, GroupBox, Frame, ListView, Menu, MessageBox, Popup, ProgressBar, PromptDialog, PropertyPage, PropertySheet, Scrollbar, Slider, Static text, StatusBar, TextEdit, Title, TreeView, ToolTip and more.
* Hardware acceleration for various graphic cards like ATI, NVidia, Chips&Techs,...
Originally started as a mockup from a GUI contest, the WindUI theme is now very functional. |

Quote: | Windows 7 beta 1 performance - How does the OS compare to Vista and XP?
How does Windows 7 beta 1 compare to Vista and XP in terms of performance? That’s a question that’s been hitting my inbox regularly over the past few weeks. Let’s see if we can’t answer it!
[...]
Rather than publish a series of benchmark results for the three operating systems (something which Microsoft frowns upon for beta builds, not to mention the fact that the final numbers only really matter for the release candidate and RTM builds), I’ve decided to put Windows 7, Vista and XP head-to-head in a series of real-world tests to find out which OS comes out top. |
Rest here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236&page=1
Guess who takes the cake.

wish it didnt sucked RAM as Vista (7 takes 560RAM at very startup after a fresh install on a 160GB HDD,whil Vista around 700+)
We'll see with the newer builds n stuff..Windows 7,in iNatan's tests,is better than the others,just u wait when you install like 4 huge programs in it and then run a game.. UNLESS ITS A FAAAAAAARM

Among other things DX11 will help since it's been multithreaded, and with supporting drivers even dx9/dx10+ hardware will get a little performance boost from that.

after some initial tweaking i got ram usage down to 280mb, internet etc still working.
Also i tried to turn off as much of the annoying stuff as i could, i turned off UAC, turned off the security service etc, but for some reason the small flag still appears on the bottom right, anyone know how to get rid of it?
Also i miss classic start menu a ton... anyone know how i can at least get the program folders to appear right away when i press start button instead of having to click "all programs"?
