Besides the technical details he also mentioned that the PC has the capabilities to deal with high resolution textures and higher quality graphics effects.

really, now?

kinda lame that the pc version of multiplatform games benefits so rarely from the extra power that they have to mention it as something special.

getting kinda sick of ps2 looking crap that gets touted as current-gen gaming.

and thank fuck this doesn't use the UE3 engine, 'cause it's starting to make me sick seeing the same drab colours and the same bulky models.

Demo planned, and for all platforms (X360, PS3 and PC) though there's no specific date set for it.

I think it's more an art design decision these days, rather than engine limitation per se... Or what, does UE3 engine show only shades of gray and brown? Very Happy

Some UE3 titles do look different but a lot of them seems to use the "default" palette.
(Bioshock looked a bit different and so did Vegas and Vegas 2 plus a few console titles like Lost Oddysey and I think FF13 uses UE3.)

That said certain lighting effects and the "bloom" usually stand out and makes it pretty easy to pinpoint if the game uses UE3.
(that bright lighting and hazy effect seen in most titles.)

EDIT: Lost Oddysey review with various images.

EDIT: Seems I was wrong about Final Fantasy and perhaps it was for the better as Sabin indicated in his post below if there were issues with how the engine was used.

You can take BioShock as an example of what the UE3 is capable of. It's design decision.

Some games though, ugh, and somehow the light makes everything look so aliased.

@JBeckman

Luckily for us, after the silly mess that is The Last Remnant, we *won't* be afflicted with the UE3 for Square's next game. Final Fantasy XIII is the last game to be running on their White Engine (what used to be known as Crystal Tools). Lost Odyssey LOOKED awesome, especially in battles, but it - too- had issues, specifically with LOADING. Good god that game has some awful loading times.

Later projects are rumoured to be UE3 though. I just hope to fucking GOD they've finally got a handle on how to use the engine .. and we don't get a repeat of that piss-poor performance like in TLR.

ME looks better because dice put some effort into it. ME is the exception, rather than the rule, if you look at the rest of the herd.

Mass Effect also look amazing, not the stereotypical UE3 colors. So yeah, we've established already UE3 can look good.

BTW, why so much UE3 talk in a FEAR 2 thread? Shouldn't we be discussing the FEAR 2 engine and how it's going to power all the shitty value games of 2012-2013? Razz

You mean like the current engine is doing lol

Why did they license it out so cheap.

Well, I think the engine is done as it was in FEAR is done, it can't compete with other current engines. So why shouldn't they license it cheap to those that want it? Both parties are pleased with the result, Monolith gets free money (the engine has been done for ages, no extra work), while the devs of the value games get an adequate engine for very cheap. Smile

System requirements, pretty tame actually, judging by the HD space requirements the game itself will be a bit big though but that's usually not a problem.

It's probably just an extension of the old engine as opposed to major changes and rewrites. Usually that makes games look fine while maintaining low system requirements (i.e. Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty 5, both using an evolution of the Call of Duty 2 engine).

FF13 use a new engine developed by Square Enix (duh !). It's called White Tools or something like that.

The Last Remnant , which is also a SE game , does use the UE 3 engine though.

Yeah I got a bit confused there, anyway the engine for F.E.A.R 2 does look very optimized and should work quite well, hopefully it's better for outdoor areas than the first engine was though.
(That helicopter scene in the second expansion was just horrible seeing the 2d city backdrop, worked fine during the end of the first game though and that game still looks OK.)
