I suggest you read the performance review I posted a few pages back. And that's made with the beta, so imagine how it will be with the RTM.

The reason DX11 is coming out now is because nothing new will happen with DX10/DX10.1. It is now considered a dud by MS. They hope that with DX11 it will be different. As for game support, until console games don't demise, games will only support the lowest common denominator - DX9.

It wasn't so much a dud as it was a means to move to a completely new way of how a graphics chip work and how Direct3D works. DirectX10 was built from scratch and didn't really bring tons of new tricks or stuff like that, it was just a way to introduce the next generation of Shader vs API structure. DirectX11 will build on DirectX10 (DX11 is now multithreaded) while introducing a new tessellation engine (requires new DX11-hardware) and Compute shaders.

I like Vista. I had tons of problems with XP. With Vista, I have yet to have a problem. It preforms well. No crashes or anything. Runs fast. Its all around good for me.

Maybe some ppl have problems because their comps arent very powerful? I dunno. I have a high-end system. But I guess ppl with low to mid range systems have problems...I dunno.

All I know Vista works perfectly for me and Im happy with it. I will switch to Windows 7 when it comes out, but I will wait 6 months till games and appz are supported for it. I never buy an OS day of release. Always bugs and they always release a more stable version 3-6 months later.
But I will switch based on the chart Leo posted and I trust Leo and his knowledge of all comp related things.

@Leo

What does RTM mean or stand for?

RTM stands for "release to manufacturing."

Wikipedia wrote:
The term “release to manufacturing” or “release to marketing” (both abbreviated RTM) is used to indicate that the software has met a defined quality level and is ready for mass distribution either by electronic means or by physical media. The term does NOT define the delivery mechanism, it only states that the quality is sufficient for mass distribution. The deliverable from the engineering organization is usually in the form of a gold master CD used for duplication or to produce the image for the web.

In most if not all cases, RTM happens prior to general availability (GA) where the product is released to the public.

Basically RTM version is the final release version.

So W7 is still beta right?

Hey, how does mass production work? Do they make one Gold copy and then make say a million duplicates or do they make a bunch of Gold copies and make a million duplicates?
Are Gold (Master/Original) copies better than the ones they sell in stores?

I don't understand what you are asking.

Windows 7 is still in early beta ( beta 1 ) and once it hits RTM they just create a Master and distribute it to use as OEM versions on pc's and laptops which are sold in stores and a little bit later the same version can be found in store with the proper packaging etc...

There's no difference.

Like how do they create the thousands of copies they ship to the store?

Do they make one special "Master" disc and make thousands of copies of it which then are packaged and sent to stores?

I dont get how they make thousands of copies that end up in stores is what Im saying dude

What happens is they make the master/gold/"teh one" version, which is then sent to a replication facility which makes millions copies of the disk, which are then, together with the manuals, etc, put into a nice box and shipped worldwide. With MS they first make it available to MSDN subscribers, then special OEM versions are sent to OEMs (Razz) and lastly the regular retail versions are shipped to stores in pretty packages (with Vista they were really pretty). I do think that Microsoft will/must screw something just for the RTM, they just can't leave an OS without some bloat or half broken implementations. Wink

I just changed utorrents "net.max_halfopen" setting to 300, which should cause event id:4226. Instead though, my client connected to at least 150 people in 1 to 2 seconds max and i dont find that event in the event log.
Did microsoft increase the limit for half open tcp/ip connections or even removed it?

Did someone test the beta for audio/video playback capeabilities? Are ffdshow, CoreAVC, DirectVobSub and AC3Filter compatible? What about SPDIF and audio drivers?

well the only bad thing I can see for now is that my sound is buzzing, but that maybe because I have downloaded 64-bit version, and the xp (where everything is alright) is 32 bit. So that the drivers don't match... Other than that, everything works fine...

Win7 Works pretty flawlessly so far in every aspect I've tested in, which is saying a lot for a beta.

I dont use CoreAVC and was too lazy to install AC3Filter and instead use ffdshow for that too. Additionally I use Reclock which outputs to spdif. Its playing fine - just like vista did so far Wink
