Me and the girlfriend are planning on spending a week in NY this year. Now we still don't have a fixed date, but I would hope for some suggestions on a hotel.
We don't need anything fancy, just a nice and clean place where you can stayy safely. It should also be in a good location, so you don't have to drive too far to get to the city. And obviously it shouldn't be too expensive.
Also any hints on what to visit apart form the obvious tourist attractions?

I know a great place, its called 'Pristine Oasis', and its on 14A East 45th Street, here's some pictures of the rooms, and I bet you'll like it, it seems to fit your budget,

I wouldn't know any hotels but make sure you do the bus ride around the city, and if you find yourself on Broadway...just go with direction that other people are going..hundreds of stores, lights, places to eat...Times Square..rockefeller center
dont ever, ever get taxi in the city..yellows ones are the most expensive..most of the time you will want to use subway, its really convinient and only 2$ per ride but soon it will be 3$
there is central park, couple of museums to visit and if you visit statue of liberty and that museum on the island..its a must for everyone!
just google for ny attracting..plently of sites that give you in-depth description on where you should go
and DO NOT give money to homeless people

no, not that but they are just ignorant..how you about you see homeless guy at entrance and they ask you for coffe...you being nice and buy it but it turns out it was decaff and they throw it out to garbage... |

I stayed at the at the Marriot Hotel in Times Square. For shopping I would have to say Duffy'ies. Under 21, and famous footwear. Right in that area. If you know what you are after then you are better off then most. I got fucked over on some photocards. AND watch your chang4e. That is how some crooks recycle thier 'bad money.
For tours I would choose those double decker buses, red with the stat. of lib painted on it. You can buy a 3 day pass for them and they go all over NY. Including Booklyn.

We had to wait in line 1.5 hours for the ferry ride to Liberty Island in July heat, but it was well worth the wait. Not only for the statue, but for the great view of Manhattan. Skip the Ellis Island stop after you get back on the ferry after Liberty Isand. Plan for at least a half a day to take in Battery park since there's other stuff to do there besides catching the ferry to the statue.

American Museum of Natural History is awesome... you can also check out Central Park at the same time as it's close. I haven't really been to many other museums/galleries but MoMA is supposed to be neat, as is the Museum of the Moving Image (although this is in Queens so only go if you're really interested in film/movies)

On a cool night just walking around hitting a few bars on the lower east side is fun too (I guess with the caveat you have to like drinking and live music). Make sure to check out the Bowery. I guess it used to be somewhat of a "dangerous" neighbourhood but it has been sufficiently gentrified to be safe but not too yuppie.

Ofc check out some other immigrant neighbourhoods ... Chinatown and Little Italy are close together so you can do some cheap shopping for knockoffs in Chinatown and then go eat/drink in Little Italy

I stayed with a friend on the upper west side so I have no idea what a good place to stay would be. But there are a few nice hostels ... some of them even have private rooms. My advice would be to stay in Manhattan, the subway ride from Brooklyn/Queens will get old pretty quick... especially if you want to pop back to your room to rest during the day before heading out at night.
I'm sure you won't forget to check out times square either, and I agree a red double decker tour is the best way to see the most of the city for a good price (any city that has them for that matter). They are hop-on-hop off and hit all the major sites, so you don't need to worry about taking the subway (I would recommend the subway if you are heading out of manhattan since it's cheap and relatively quick).
Don't try to to see everything in one trip, it's impossible. I'd suggest making the most of seeing all you can of Manhattan and forget about Queens/Brooklyn/Coney Island/The Bronx.

Go shopping @ duffy'ies. (not sure the spelling) "Famous footwear" was great for me.
There was a discount mall that I forgot it's name. It has Esprit Coats, shoes for 1/6 of the price. The whole mall was discount. It was within walking distance to times square. The whole look of the shops was wholesale-ish. If you wanna go shopping I would google it.
Also for shopping you want to check out the second hand store. Very Prada-happy.

I'd say Brooklyn is the spot. Hot women, good bars and clubs etc
If u have the money, the Manhattan. Its expensive but its fun as hell
