It's funny how they act like they actually achieved something of significance after doing a few flips on a machine. It's nothing compared to the achievements of real athletes who push the human body to it's limits.

Okay, now that's the first post from you that i REALLY disagree with..
But i don't blame you - you've only seen the flipping part of what for example Travis has done.
He's not just a freestyle motocross rider, he's also a supercross rider. Now, if by "real athletes" you mean runners, football players, hockey players or any olympic sport, then they aren't really in the same league as supercross riders. They push their bodies extremely hard, crash and break bones on a regular basis.
Just to mention his injuries:
Separated his spine from his pelvis (when he was 14!), followed by a two week coma and three months in a wheelchair. He has torn his ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL, his bucket handle meniscus, broken his tibia and fibula, had surgery on his left wrist twice, left thumb once, two back surgeries, one on his elbow, nine on his left knee, six on right, and one on his shoulder. He rode the 2007 SCORE Baja 1000 on a dirtbike, one of the most physically challenging races in the world.
No, not every supercross rider does this, but the fact still remains that they are one of the toughest sort of athletes around.

QFT.
And you have to have much courage to do such stunts.

As if injuries are any indication of an athletes accomplishments. By that standard the Jackass boys are some of the 'toughest sort of athletes around'.
You're obviously a fan so I'm not going to bother debating this with you, but I'm not impressed by this kind of 'athlete' at all.

Ok, lets be clear, I was specifically referring to the stunt performances, not any particular performer. I don't consider doing flips on a motorcycle a significant achievement.
Courage to do stunts? There are enough people out there willing to do dangerous crap for attention.

All these injuries, and not one major enough to stop him from annoyingly commentating in Dirt!
I also don't see these sports, as well as other extreme sports as worthwhile. But that's just my opinion. Some of these sports are downright crazy and not worth the risks. So what if they have courage? Doesn't mean anything. Like AM said, a lot of people do crazy stuff just to be on camera, so? Doesn't mean they are great athletes. BTW, the word athlete, by definition, comes from athletics, as in track and field athletics, and has nothing to do with motorsport.

Awesome. I'd give it a try with a lil bit of practise (like trying it into a pool a few times).
Flipping a Big Wheel, wicked
As for whether or not motorbike jumpers or people of that sort, it takes alot of skill.
There's no difference between winning whatever it is you win in the World Championships for Motorbike Stunt Jumping and winning say the World Series/Super Bowl/World Cup etc
Each discipline takes a ton of skill and whether or not you like the sport, you have to respect the skill.
Im not a fan of Soccer. I think its boring as watching paint dry and such, but I recognize the skill it takes to play professionally. And just because I don't like the sport doesn't mean I will say there's no significance to it. Its a sport. There's really no significance to any sport aside from fun and entertainment.

Haha, i must admit, i was about to write the same thing about the Jackass-actors.
And I know, i didn't really explain it all too well, the injuries doesn't have anything to do with it - all i wanted to show was how tough these guys are, and they always get back in the game. Take Seth Enslow for example, tried the world record jump on a bike, overshot the landing, slammed into the ground and cracked his head. Two titanium plates and 20-something staples Was back riding four weeks after that, and that even I found to be kinda stupid
But anyway - what makes an athlete a good one? What made me react was "It's nothing compared to real athletes". Well the flips take a huge ammount time and training to do, its hard enough doing one, when he lands two in one jump it IS impressive.
But again! Aside from the flips and stunts, a professional-grade supercross (stadium/arena motocross races) rider is extremely well-trained, physically as well as mentally. Just one lap around one of those tracks is exhausting, doing 20 and staying on top of the game takes alot. That's why you can so often see that riders crash from being exhausted and losing control.
So in short, what i'm saying is that while stunts and flips is one thing, and might not be considered as athletic achievements, the racing-part of what they do really is.
