^^ DITTO!!! ^^
Sins ROCKS!!! I wish there were more RTS games that weren't 1-2 hour resource gatherers! Me and my buddies get together to play once in awhile and we create a fairly large universe and 8 hours later we usually aren't close to being finished. It's good that you can set the size of your universe.
The Entrenchment expansion is coming Feb 11th, too.

-Age of Wonder 2
-Ground Control 1 (superb) & 2 (pretty good but it lacks a lot of what GC1 had)
-Nexus Jupiter Incident -> a bit different but still rts; bad story, medium gameplay, very good graphics, low requirements (damn too low i might say; very good engine)
-Universe at War Earth Assault
-Star Wars empire at War + Forces of Corruption
-Age of Mithology + Titans (awsome campaign)
-Warhammer Mark of Chaos (it's not Warhammer 40k related)

Universe At War is pretty awesome! Has the most diverse factions in any RTS I can think of. If you don't like base building try World In Conflict or DoW2.

CC5 - Out now and for some years.. the best and only, Close Combat 5 (5 is my personal favorite some like better CC3 and others CC4 wish have been re-released by matrix)
MOW - Out in a month, Men of War (sequel to SHOWW2 another all time favorite)
Does are my picks - keep in mind there is no base building in neither of them and all favor a realistic approach, set in WW2
PS: Total War Empire is also coming in a month so March2009 seems to be the best RTS month in years..there is also DoW 2

What's wrong with BfME2? I liked both games equally.

I felt 1 was very well done and tight. Archers on the walls and groups of enemies coming up in not so tight formations. There was that feeling of dread in 1 that was missing from 2. There were a lot of things done well in 2 but it just seemed to lose that special something that 1 had. Wave after wave of these perfectly square looking formations coming up to your walls with no archers on the walls was weird to me. Granted your archers could shoot over the walls in an arc. I had more "Movie" moments in the first game. I played once with my step-son and he was near death until I had 20 or more Rohirram come out of no where and trample Mordor! Orcs flying everywhere!! Awesome! He was able to rebuild and we ended up winning after 7 hours of battle on HARD and taking the whole map. We never had anything like that happen in 2. It just didn't work and was clumsy. My dream BFME game would have been to mix 1 and 2 together because I loved how you could build up your castle in 2 instead of the stationary castles in 1.
Anyway, my 2 cents,
MD

Supreme commander : Forged Alliance
Very hard to learn especially for newbies , but its by far the most strategic and intensive rts you'll ever play.
If you like small scale and coh or dow2 are your thing.
If you want something free TASpring is your friend.

i tend to disagree.... it's a good game, more or less strategic, but intensive .... no way. but i must say i really liked those HUGE maps & disliked the HUGE loading times & HUGE lag when having more than 300-400 units fighting.....

I tried it, but didn't like the unified infantry/tank capacity, and that you can only reinforce your units near HQs (I felt that it cut down the momentum of the game). So I still prefer DoW to CoH. Just a preference though, CoH is not a bad game by all means, I just never got into it that much, maybe because of the WW2 setting.
As for a recommendation, try Spellforce. I'd only recommend the original and it's expansions, as the second one was pretty generic. The game is a bit older, and it has heavy RPG elements as well as a great story.

As a RTS-fan i'll wait for StarCraft 2 but if you can't wait i'd play one of these games:
C&C (1st one)
Total Annihilation
Dark Reign
Dune 2 (the one that started it all)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X | Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black | ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero | 32 GB Trident Z 3600Mhz | Gigabyte Aorus PCIe4 1TB SSD | Corsair MP510 1TB SSD |ASUS RTX 3080 Ti TUF | Fractal Design Define 7 | Seasonic 850W Platinum
