I've downloaded most of the Total War games before, but I've always had an embarrasing taste in my mouth while playing them. The quality of these games is just too good not so support commercially. I always end up with buying them because I love the series too much. I also think about the PC as a platform. Good games should be backed-up by consumers for the sake of the platform and to ensure similar games in the future.
When I think of it I've tried buying them all for release, but being euro-based sometimes mean publishers release games several days/weeks post US. That drives a lot of would-be customers into piracy. It's ethically wrong, but it's a fact nevertheless. If you got the choice between waiting several days/week or just download something from the net the temptation can be too great for some of us weak characters.
i bought Medieval 2, and was really stoked to get it... it looked awesome. but to be honest i was totally letdown with the game. there were many bugs, and they kept dragging a patch release (and if i recall, it was a huge patch, like 500mb and we are not talking a final, like patch 2). then they let it leak, and recalled it, and dragged the patch some more. and then they announced a expansion, nice. and you know how that goes, patch and game features are now dropped to be put into the expansion.
i talked my bro into buying it for the multiplayer, which was a huge letdown for a game of this scope. it consisted of skirmish maps only, no kind of campaign mode at all (which i understand is being added to the new version finally).

I like how they always use close-up screenshots, considering no one actually plays that way.
If they didn't zoom in, you wouldn't get to see all the detail now would you? If they kept it zoomed out. . . people would have some kind of conspiracy theory saying it was because stuff didn't look good enough when zoomed in or some such.

I do when the battle is in full swing. I'll zoom in as close as possible to an exciting area of action, watch for a min or 2, zoom out, check on things, zoom back in.
Thats one of my fav aspects of TW. If you couldn't zoom in so close and it didnt have such good detail, it wouldn't be as good. It'd be like a lot of other strat games with shit graphics (but still good game play and what not).
And yeah, I do like good graphics in my games....in this day and age, it's a requirement for me. They don't have to be top notch, but good at least.
And again, TW always has good graphics considering the amount of stuff incorporated into the game...that they do into such detail and focus on battle graphics is a selling point as again, most other strat games don't or, not as well.
Maybe already answered but will the "elite" units from "Empire TW Special Forces" be available as down loadable content if you have the normal version?
Quote:
Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition consists of the following premium content for aficionados of the Total War series. This content is for use with Empire: Total War. Once Empire: Total War is installed the elite units will become available in the single player game.
* HMS Victory — The Royal Navy's most distinguished and formidable first rate ship of the line; Lord Nelson's 104 gun flagship is one of the most heavily armed ships of the 18th Century.
* Rogers' Rangers — Major Robert Rogers' company of rangers are highly trained elite light infantry, specialising in reconnaissance and special operations. They are extremely mobile in even the most challenging environments.
* Ottoman Organ Gun — A viciously powerful field gun, able to inflict incredible damage on the opposing army. Emphatic proof of the Ottoman Empire's advanced knowledge of gunpowder and firearms technology.
* Ghoorkas — "Better to die than be a coward" has been the motto of these elite Nepalese soldiers for centuries. Disciplined, tough and courageous, they carry a deadly 18-inch long, curved knife known as the kukri.
* Corso Terrestre Guerillas — An independent light infantry guerrilla regiment, experienced in skirmish and stealth tactics. Surprise raids and ambushes are the guerillas' favoured tactics, a way to compensate for their limited number and light armour.
* Bulkeley's Regiment — A French unit of Irish mercenaries with a fearsome reputation for hardiness. Exceptionally tough and resilient, they make for a highly flexible and dependable regiment.
Can't wait for the naval battles, the still shots alone are drool-worthy.
Has there been a complete list of playable factions anywhere yet? And they better have full area of Finland in the campaign map this time around, so I can play the glorious finnish empire as a mod if nothing else.

Could well be that Finland is a part of Sweden... .
Looking at this trailer...Finland will be there, at least in the campaign map
There are no barbarian states
10 factions confirmed (the Europeans posted above) on the Grand Campaign plus US (13 colony's) on the side campaign
One Indian faction confirmed probably Mughals
Theres one spot available to make 12 playable on the GP (if US does not count for the total)
Portugal, Denmark or Venice are the most probable candidates

'finnish empire'?
it's a made-up country between two actual empires

Swedish kings established their rule in 1249.
On March 29, 1809, after being conquered by the armies of Alexander I of Russia in the Finnish War, Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire until the end of 1917.
and only then independence
E:TW takes place on 1700s and 1800s
so you're forced to play with either swedish or russians
Well, it was different in Medieval and Shogun, but now that you mention it I remember this from the newer games. Guess I must have used some sort of unlocker. All 50+ will be playable eventually though, right?

yes.
It as been said in an interview that them, CA, expect the players to change a file in a minute and unlock all the factions (40+).
It as also been said that there are 12 balanced factions in the Grand Campaign to start with.
