He's on something. I'd bet money on it. The glasses, the fact he's so unkempt, the slowness...he's on some sorta downer.

It looks like an act, especially judging by the end with him taking his glasses and talking to Letterman, but him putting that idiot Paul and his silly laughter in his place was priceless.
At worst, he could be high on something. A lot of actors feel the need to take something before going to such interviews because they feel they will be more "flowing" that way. It's sad, but if it was the case, it's not that much of a biggie. I've seen other actors like that on Letterman as well, drunk, high, etc.
He's one of the most self-critical artists I've heard about. He thought his acting on eg. Gladiator was next to shite, that he couldn't understand why they would pick him to act with such 'greats' under such a director, etc. - I think this guy is really depressed and just feel that acting is too much of a strain on the ego. (too much publicity) and is doing a sort of Russel Crowe-routine to break out of it (both want to do music, Crowe hasn't said he'd quit movie making... yet).
I have tremendous respect for Phoenix as an actor, and the fact that he's on drugs just shows how easily the human mind can buckle to pressure (internal or external).

For once we agree. And wether he's actually going into music (hip-hop is an _odd_ choice after someone who portrayed Johnny Cash perfectly), or just taking some time off with his brother-in-law and best friend Casey Affleck making a hip-hop documentary, or actually switching career is yet to be known for sure.

If she's super hot...imagine being a cousin of theirs, your with a good looking girl but no super hottie, you go to a family function and Ben shows up with Jennifer Garner, Phoenix shows up with his hottie (if she's hot) and Casey prolly has some hot hollywood celeb girlfriend aswell.....fuck....it'd be so depressing lol
