well if you want to have a real vacation to morocco I wouldn't recommend Casablanca but Marrakesh, you get to see some really weird but entertaining stuff in there especially in "jamaa' elfna", casablanca is just too urban and modern you won't be seeing new stuff, unless that's what you're looking for
also hotels in casablanca are more expensive than Marrakesh, and it's not as safe.
but overall people will welcome you with open arms and you'll have a really great time

hmm.. now that I'm thinking about it renting a car and driving like that isn't really a good plan. I also forgot how many low priced flights are available.
Starting to think now flying from TO into Madrid, stay 3-4 nights. Fly from madrid --> barcelona, stay 3-4 nights. Fly from barcelona --> Malaga. Spend 5-6 days visiting Malaga, Marbella, Greneda (or if we can find a good deal Then rent a car for a week and do whatever we can, probably starting off with Gibralter-->Ceuta-->Morocco--> then come back up the coast towards Portugal? finish off returning the car back to Malaga (only ~5 hours from south coast of portugal) and then go up to madrid to go home.
@xtralong, that's Algarve right? What would be a good place to stay for ~3 nights that is fairly cheap and relaxing (ie nice views and not too crowded)? Is it worth it to go up to Lisbon? If we stay in beach area for a few days, we might not have time...

We had planned on going to Spain anyways for a trip, just happened to be at the same time as we are getting married. Caribbean would be fun, but not really for a 3 week trip ... how long can you actually hang out on a beach for?

Oh dude, much MUCH more than just chillin on the beach. People in the Caribbean know how to party man. Always something hype going on. One of the funnest places on earth man.
And the thing is, you can go to all the islands....just take a boat ride. Especially if your there for 3 weeks.
Only place I wouldn't go is Cuba....the whole kidnapping/robbing shit that goes on.
So whatcha going to do in spain? What sights are there to see?

Sounds pretty cool still The historical sites and museums are particularly appealing to me.
Btw, this is off topic but my girl just told me tomorrow is a Statutory Holiday called "Family Day".....when did this get put into effect? I called my boss and he said yeah, no work tomorrow.
Is this the first year this has been implemented? Cause I don't recall this last year...
My bad for going off topic but being Canadian, you'd know and I didn't think a thread is warranted for a simple question. |

No, its Costa Vicentina. Algarve have to much people, too much ''expensive'' and ugly as fuck at least the more cheap areas.

Has anyone every stayed in Marbella, Spain?
We are looking for a resort-type town in the Costa del Sol to spend a week ... there are a bunch of apartments that are only ~300-400 euros a week ... but how expensive is everything else in Marbella? And is it still fun (without being too crowded) towards the end of October (19th-26th). Not going to Morocco anymore (too far to drive to Marrakesh) so we figured it would be good to relax without having to do much for a week.
@xtralong ... I was looking at a local travel website (expedia.ca, one of the largest in canada), and I can't really find many hotels in that area. I can find lots of good deals in Albufeira, and it's not that far to drive out along the Costa Vincentina. I was thinking it would be best to just get a place for 3 nights as a kind of 'home base' and then we would just drive wherever we wanted to each day. Another question would be, since this it going to be at the end of the trip, that would mean at the very end of October ... how are things then in the South of Portugal (weather, people, stuff to do etc.)?

Revised plan seems to be ...
1) fly into Madrid, stay 3 nights
2) fly to Barcelona (20 euros on a budget airline), stay 4 nights
3) fly to Malaga (again, cheap as shit flights), stay 7 nights somewhere on the coast (like Marabella)
4) rent a car for a week, see Granada, Gibralter and Seville ... get to south of Portugal within 3-4 days
5) stay 3 nights somewhere on south/southeast coast of portugal
6) return car to malaga, take either plane/bus/train back to madrid, fly home
I think this is a little more realistic than the first plan. Hopefully Madrid/Barcelona/Malaga airports are not that busy that flying is a pain in the ass... going to be expensive though ... for two people ... $800x2 for flight to spain, $2000 for 3 weeks of lodging, probably at least $750 for entertainment, another $750 for food, $500 for car and gas, another $300 for transport within spain = about $6000 for the both of us for 3 weeks  But hey, you only have one honeymoon (hopefully!) and we should get a couple thousand in wedding cash gifts.

Was in that area last year. I just did southern Spain.
Anyways, i would rent a car and drive, i found Spain awesome to drive in.
Anyways. So things i would recommend.
1. Go to Tarifa. Its on the most southern tip of spain. This is a great place to stay if your doing a day trip to moroco (The farry from tarifa is only 30 -45 min to moroco. A great place to stay in Tarifa is called La Sacrista. Its a small little bed a breakfast, thats very funky, every room is unique.
2. Do not stay in Algeraze (Forget the spelling), its the main port to moroco, and its filthy, and we found it felt dangerous.
3. I loved Gibraltor, but donot try to drive into it. Park and walk in, and remember to bring your passport.
4. Marbella spain is amazing. Stay there for sure, or just down the road in Estopona.
5. If you stay in Marbella or Estopona, you can get to Ronda and Monda fairly quickly.
Ronda is a great old town, with a bull ring etc. I loved Ronda. Monda is in the country side, and if you get a chance, reserve a room in Castle del Monda. Its not to expensive, and is very very romantic. My sister was married in this castle. Book well in advance.
The views from castle del Monda are amazing.
Seville IMHO was kinda meh, i would go to moroca over seville.
This is how i did Spain. I booked are first to night just past Marbella, and had my castle reservation for later in the week. The rest we winged it.
My favroite place is Spain was Tarifa, and my favortie hotel was La Sacrista in Tarifa.
Tarifa is like 5 minutes from the Portugal boarder.
Heh, i was there last October, IMHO it was the perfect time. You guys will love it.
Edit. Marbella isnt that expensive. ITs not cheap either. A 3 star hotel it about say 60 - 120 euros. A five star in estopona cost me $365 Euros a night. And hostels (3 stars are close to hostels, well in algeraze anyways) start at $40 ish a night.

^^ Glad to hear you liked Marbella, since it looks like it will be a significant part of the trip. My parents actually have access to a timeshare network, so we should be able to get a weekly rental for pretty cheap. I was more concerned about entertainment, food, drink etc. being pricey there since it's such a touristy spot.
Actually talking to their travel agent it looks like we might just get another weekly rental around Seville, and then do whatever we can in day trips over the next week (with perhaps a night or two elsewhere like in Granada since the weekly rental will be a good deal). Seville is just kind of a good central location to explore everything else (2 hrs drive to portugal, 2-3 hours to granada, 2 hours to Tarifa, 2 hours to Ronda) so a good place for base camp during that week.

In marbella, watch out for the hookers on the beach. We rented a cabana there, and these two young little girls were doing everything in there power to get my attention, while my wife if sitting next to me. i wasnt expecting that in marbella for some reason.
Food in marbella isnt overly expensive, but i didnt find the food in spain much to my liking anyways. My favorite meal was actually in moroco.
Oh, and if you do you to moroco, watch out for the tour guides. We had one (On a recommendation of a family friend) and all seemed good at first. Then everything changes once you get to the market. We quickly realized that when he was on his cell phone, he was giving a heads up to all his vendors that give him kick backs. After two carpet places, we were fed up. We actually bought a rug just to get out of one store.
Oh and in moroco, tell your wife to dress very conservatively. The men could not handle that my wife was showing her arms and wearing a skirt. I had many many men say rude (I think it was rude by there tone anyways) things to me, and our guide said they referring to me as weak because i let my wife dress in such a way.
One more heads up. If you park, and some people come ask you to pay to watch your car. Do it. Its only about ten bucks, and friends of mine decided not to pay and ended up losing everything in there car, including passports.

bah, I know nobody gives a shit but I just finished planning this son of a bitch at last! only about 2 1/2 months away now bored at work so I figured I'd tell you all about my plans
fly from toronto to madrid, stay 4 nights in Madrid @ flat5Madrid (right in city centre)

so yeah, no more car rental and driving far distances bullshit. obviously don't need one in madrid/barcelona and the apt in marbella is walking distance to everything. we'll probably do some day trips from there (rondo, seville, gibraltar, granada) ... planning on renting a 50cc moped as well (only 25 euro a day). any one have an experience driving those things in the rain/wet road conditions? this is the one I'll probably get, or the 125cc one...
