I'd rather say that it was boringness that killed DIRT. GRID is so much diverse and can satisfy much wider array of gamers. DIRT pointed only at *some* of us, WRC sport maniacs.

It actually altered how your car behaved based on what part of the track you drove on which was cool. If you followed a previous cars grooves your car would tram line in that direction a bit and hopping over where no tire tracks were left behind would unsettle the car. It was really cool. Surprising addition for such a straight forward game but today's market requires a eye catching new feature and that was it.

Well DIRT is a hybrid and they can definitely retain that quality and still upgrade their tracks. All rallying involves wheel spin and sideways momentum which is non existent in DIRT (But some how Sega Rally does, and just about every rally game to come out since PS1) because it's really GRID 0.5 on brown "circuits." Which really makes zero sense given how little grip there is on "DIRT." I loved the game back then but after playing it now I see the huge potential and room for improvement which is why I'm really excited for the 2nd one. I hope DIRT 2 does more to set itself apart and really distinguish itself as a off roader racer rather than a GRID in a muddy disguise.

The old Colin Mcrae games were all about gracefully sliding your car across sweepers and hairpins. I tried it in DIRT and my car promptly stops and turns on rails. Laughing

EDIT: And yes Sega Rally Revo has 0 depth but that's because it's a 100% instant gratification arcade racer and always has been since Sega Rally on the Saturn. It really can't be compared to DIRT since they are two different approaches at the same genre. One is mindless fun while the other is more involved but way too subdued to please rally fans.

Don't forget that Dirt was also first and foremost made to appeal to mainstream America. The previous CMR games were hits mainly in Europe, and Codemasters were looking to pave a road in America's dirt (I tried and failed to have a pun as well!)

But you should go to the Pimp My Dirt forum and get the realism mods that are available, if that is your thing. I remember putting one of them and not being able to control the car at all Laughing

LoL @ Pimp my DIRT. Nah I tend to stay away from the user created realism mods. They mostly over exaggerate vehicle characteristics in an attempt to make it more real. Formula usually is - 400FT braking distances, ZERO traction, Less steering angle = realism mod. Laughing

I just want the driving experience less generic and a little more "Colin Mcrae."

According to the latest dev interview DiRT2 will be even MORE Americanized. More focus on rally cross, arenas with many cars and other similar bullcrap, damage will only effect car visuals but not handling. Looks like point to point rally will soon be obsolete in games. Evil or Very Mad

It's one of the modes of the games (no damage). Listen to the interview again.

Nothing sounds out of the ordinary, they are just adding some stuff for US players.

There was a mod that fixed the handling issues, plus made the damage much more realistic. Smile

Anyone play the original dirt with a wheel? I tried grid with a wheel and it's impossible to play with the way the controls are set up. Seems like most arcade racing games on PC are best played with a control pad.

Well it looks good. Maybe a little too good? I mean GRiD doesn't look anywhere near as good on my PC and that's with everything on the highest settings at 1080p, so I'd be interested to see how this runs on the consoles... but keeping an open mind it definitely looks fun... and with that in mind count me in as one of those looking forward to it (and their F1 game in particular).

I wonder though, is it the same team on this that worked on GRiD?

Nice, graphics and damage effects are amazing (even if is a sd cam video); seems that the gameplay will be just like the first one: arcadey but fun. Anyway videos showed what I expected, and it was good Cool
