@Baleur
You make it sound as if the real-time battles don't constitute RTS gameplay, which they of course do.
No, the game cannot be catagorized as an RTS, because that's not all it is. But it's still partly an RTS.

This game is split in to two parts, one strategy and one RTS. If you chose to autoresolve all battles you end up with a strategy game but you definatly miss out on the best part of the game. Imho this is a RTS game because if one play out each battles, which is a BIG point with this game, you will spend more time on the battlefields than the strategy map.
Alot of the strategy has been simplified. The micromanagement of towns is mainly gone. Everything has been made easier to give the players an easier overloook of the towns.

Why argue over what type of game this is when obviously it's a Shooter/RPG hybrid.
Poor jokes aside, I WANTZ IT! MY PRECIOUS!
I'm in the middle of a LotR marathon. Done with the first movie. X:

That guys voice is so horrible for a video reveiw, but man, the game sounds amazing.. I drooled extra much during the campaign map shots. |
I know, everything but the guys voice was great. Seriously, it was such a joke from beginning to end. Even his comment at the end "that's where I'm going right now". I found myself trying not to laugh throughout the entire thing!
I don't know if you're on Xbox Live much, but there are a few people there as well that are just as bad. Trixie360 is one, although at least she tries. The others though are these two editor guys named Denny and Ryan who release "Insider Moves" from time to time over Xbox Live. They sound just as bad, no joke, and Microsoft pays them. Check out a video and prepare to laugh:

Anyways, I've got two retail copies of E:TW on order, can't wait.

RTS games without base building are generally called Action-RTS, just like RPG's without story or character development is called Action-RPG. ^_^
And im sick of waiting lol, i'm pre-ordering this on Steam. At least i can drool at the icon =P

Quote: | RPS: What kind of changes have you made to the campaign map when compared to the previous games?
Russell: The most obvious difference is the sheer scale of the game world. This was the time when Europe was extending its power across the world, and when the first truly global wars were fought. As well as the European theatre, the campaign map stretches west to include the Caribbean and much of North America and east to include the whole of India, as well as special trade areas such as the East Indies and the Ivory Coast.
Another big change is the fact that regions have towns and other resource buildings spread around the landscape, unlike previous Total War titles where all a region’s buildings were contained inside a single settlement. This means you can interact with each region building directly on the map - it also means you can attack enemy towns, farms and other buildings without having to besiege the region capital. Because you can raid and damage a region like this, it becomes more important for defenders to use their armies in defensive manoeuvres rather than just camping inside the city. This also helps improve the variety of battles by reducing the frequency of siege battles.
We’ve also centralised some features at the national rather than regional level, which streamlines management for the player by reducing repetition. This allows us to deepen the gameplay at the same time as reducing the management burden. For example, we’ve added a lot of depth to the trade system, and tax levels can be set separately for the ruling classes or the people, with different consequences - but policy is conducted at a theatre level: the player no longer has to make a decision for every single region |

If you're in Europe. The poor fucks in the States, like myself, have to wait till 4PM CST on the 4th. Fuck that.

Wow, after reading the Eurogamer review(and various snippets of previews), I'm even more convinced they did things right in this game, especially with the talk of Much improved AI. And graphics, as nice as they are, seem to be one of the less massive improvements, which is definitely something I am a believer in. Although I usually don't take much stock in their reviews, they usually go the negative path rather than overly positive.
With a game this ambitious, even as compared to its predecessors, my fear is that they spread themselves too thin. I think my greatest pet-peeve in gaming is the addition of features that feel exactly like they are there for the blurb on the box, and not fully developed into their own right to be there. Such as the ship battles, which impressed me somewhat from what I saw in the demo.
Anyways glad I pre-ordered at local b&m near work. Especially since I was informed that if I would've just come in pre-order-less on the day of release or thereafter I would've been sorely disappointed as they don't stock computer games. The bastards..
