|
 |
I just reformatted my computer again, Vista was getting reeeeeeeally slow, it was good, glad I tried it instead of believing the complaining, but for long term use XP just seems the wiser choice. Since my motherboard requires AHCI to get all 5 Sata ports working I tried to install "third party AHCI/Raid drivers" during the installation of XP by pressing F6, did nothing, both with USB and P/S2 keyboards, but I read in Wiki I think that the drivers can be installed after installation, but everytime I try from the driver DVD it seems to require a floppy, but I don't have a FDD installed so was wondering if there was a way around this or if I was missing something, thanks in advance for the help.

i see in your sig you have only 2 gigs of ram. when i first installed vista I had 2 gigs of ram and it loaded up and ran really slow, and once I added another 2gigs (4 total) it was night and day difference.
as for the AHCI issue, did you have AHCI enabled in bios instead of IDE before you installed windows?

yes you need to disable AHCI in the BIOS before installing!

Its not running slow asin I turn the comp on and it lags bad, it's running slow asin I have used it for a month or 2 and now its starting to run slow, and I would of thought if F6 didn't work on AHCI, Sata would of been no different, oh well.
I was using AHCI while installing, will try Sata now.
UPDATE: No difference, I think it's most likely cause I'm using Windows XP Professional Corperate Edition, not normal Professional. No possible way to do it in the OS?

no, i use the corporate edition all the time and i have no problems.
You indeed need a fdd in order to install these drivers for XP. I dont believe that it can be done with an USB drive or dvd/cd.
It might be doen by adding the driver to your installation disc when you burn it...i'll have a look on the net to try and find info...

AHCI drivers can be installed after WinXP install. I did it when I installed my WinXP (installed in IDE mode and later switched to SATA mode)
Don't know if you can do it, though, as this requires that some SATA ports work in IDE while the rest work in SATA mode.
I have Gigabyte MA770-DS3 rev 2.0 with 6 SATA ports.
How I did it :
Install WinXP in IDE mode.
After install I switched 4 ports to SATA mode and 2 were left in IDE mode.
Switched my HDD to SATA port that was working in IDE mode.
Boot WinXP.
WinxP detected AHCI controller and requested drivers for it.
Installed drivers.
Changed all SATA ports to SATA mode.
Booted WinXP without problems.
Don't know if this will work for you since I didn't see in the manual of your MBO option to switch some SATA ports to SATA mode while the rest would work in IDE mode.
One could still do this if you had an extra IDE HDD. You would just have to create an image of you SATA install partition, dump it to IDE disc, boot from IDE disc and install AHCI drivers and then dump that install back to SATA disc.
Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

The only options in my BIOS is Sata, Raid and AHCI, as for IDE hdds, I haven't used them since 2 of mine crapped out for no reason at the same time out of the blue, my Sata hdds were left fine, which was 2 years ago or so, now I use them as paper weights, try find 1 and see if it works still, but not now, now is sleep time, and tomorrow is work, but thanks for the help, I'll get on it after work...I hope.

u don't need ide drives to enable ahci for sata after installing os
open regedit;
go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci
modify Start from 4 to 0
reboot
go to bios
enable ahci
boot into windows
install sata drivers that came with your mobo
reboot again
tested on vista, dunno if xp has same registry entry

Here is how I managed to switch my XP to AHCI.
While controller was in IDE mode, I installed AHCI drivers. For my mobo they were with installer(ala the way nVIDIA drivers are installed). Rebooted system, and at BIOS changed controller to AHCI mode. As soon as XP booted it detected new controller, hdd, etc. Automatically installed drivers and asked me to reboot the system.
After restart I went to Device Manager and deleted old IDE controller and related nodes marked with yellow exclamation mark.
Then I did the same for Vista 64 as I have dual boot setup, slowly migrating to Vista 64 only.

ok weird thing happend
i had to reinstal vista x64 [don't ask why] and decided to enable ahci just before that, when vista is about to finish it's installation it stucked on a loading loop, so i disabled ahci and enabled ide, installation continued, i did installed vista's on different pc's with ahci on before, so u dunno why this happened, in any case ide mode is faster than ahci, at least for me with sata2 drives

I need AHCI mode to use all my Sata ports, atm I'm running on 3 with the extra 2 un-usable which is a pain in the ass as my last mobo had 4 usable 1s, found my floppy will try getting it running today as nothing else to do really.
