I'll start by saying that today's the Bulgarian National day. And there is this forum I visit from time to time and they made a thread about it. Everyone started shouting how proud they are of being Bulgarian and of what happened on this day bla bla.
That's where I come in and say patriotism is bs, you can't be proud of something you haven't put an effort in etc.
Good point! Another parallel between the two is that those who voice their opinion against it are shunned like in DP's case. It's just another system to manipulate people. Makes people overlook the flaws in their own country and unite against a common enemy which is ofcourse decided by the government at the time and is very variable.
Does your rotting corpse care whether you are buried with state honours or eaten up by scavengers? Do you (after your death) care about how you are remembered? Ofcourse nobody is talking about committing something stupid like treason which could have consequences for family members.
Where you're born is just a random incident and to take pride in accomplishments of some stranger just because he is a countryman is ridiculous. Same logic could be extended to things like sports fandom among other things.

This is all true. I'd prefer to take it as golden and strengthen my relationship with the people who surround me, regardless. It's not like I have any say in the matter. Voting isn't really that democratic and power is as power will always be. If the prime minster asks me to shoot a man to save our country, I'll make my own judgements on the situation, but here and now, i'm gonna have a barbie with my mate down the street and be "Australian".

what's pointless is going against the current publicly
such acts will do much more harm than good and are better left alone
some people are just not to argue about
keep the argument energy for something worthwhile

Needless to say, I was crucified.
So yeah, patriots suck, what ya think?
What should matter is not if patriotism "sucks" or "doesn't suck" - it is the facts that the patriots that cucified you stayed at home today to argue on the internet instead of being outside showing how much exactly they respect the memorie of their freedom....That enough is to judge how much of patriots they realy are...
As for patriotism itself my pragmathical views prevent me from understanding it...yet as all forms of "love" when expressed only through words and no action behind(as in actualy helping build the country you so love and not just scream your lungs on the city square) it generaly tends to be just a usless excuse for your weakness when you fail in the set goal(be that the love of someone or the wellbeeing of the said one)...
Also: DarkPassanger - Happy Holiday - we might have not put any effort to feel proud, but I am quite certain you have more then enough reasons to enjoy the freedom the events of war and the victory, this day symbolise won you...
Deelix - yes the results are most likely accurate - even if all is fine or is actualy turning better , slavinic blood somehow demands that you experess your discontent with the govorment and the way things are by saing you are not happy with life in general, even if your life is perfectly well and going according to your expectation...In my expiriance when you ask someone "How's it going?" the best possible answer would be a sign and a "Fine"...the general answer however is "Ohhh...did you realy have to ask" , followed by a long detailed descriptions of those daily dramas you usualy wouldn't pay attention too, that are most likely products of your faults but still someone else is to blame..the usual victims are "our times" "our generation" and "the goverment" "those damn idiots" or lately "the judeo-zionic turkish comunists gypsy mafia"....

Yeah, man. I'm happy about what happened on this day, and I'm also thankful to all the great people that sacrificed themselves in the name of our freedom. For me freedom is what they fought for, not some artificial geographical entity.
@deelix
Yeah, I heard about that statistic(s?). There isn't much to be happy about, come live here in one of the medium sized towns for a month and you'll see what I'm talking about. I wouldn't say people are unhappy though, or happy for that matter. Content is the word I think.

A REAL patriot would defend the good sides of a country, but not neglect the bad things. A true patriot would work towards turning those bad things into good things.

I see no problem with being proud of your country. I'm a proud/patriotic Canadian.
Tho, I'm not one of those idiots who thinks whatever my Gov does is ALWAYS correct.
Being patriotic means questioning and speaking out against things your Gov does that hurts the country,
People who don't do that can't call themselves patriotic imo.
I don't know who said it but I've heard it somewhere - Question Everything or something like that.
You shouldn't be proud just because of some circumstance you were born into, but I don't see why there is any problem actually liking where you live <3 Canada

That doesn't make sense.
I'm proud of the things Canada has accomplished in it's history and I'm proud to be a Canadian.
Personally, I think it's the best country in the world. We do have problems, like every other country. But overall, I think Canada is where it's at.
We are truly multi-cultural. There's hardly any racism. People get along for the most part. We help each other and other countries all the time.
And everywhere you go, people love Canadians.
A few cousins of mine took a trip to Europe last year. The US Embassy or whatever the org is that informs you about the country your going to and gives you travel tips told them to wear something with the Canadian Flag on it at all times. Something visible (not a small pin or anything).
The only place Americans, even tho they are really good people, don't have a hard time is in Canada.
The whole stigma thing i guess.
It's funny tho, cause generally, Americans are really nice people and very friendly.
Especially if you go there (like you or I cause were Canadian). They love Canadians and are so nice if they know your Canadian. Well, at least in my experience.
I've only ever had one problem while in the US (NYC) at a bar and it had nothing to do with me being Canadian.
The 3 countries I would feel safest in is the US, UK and France (never been to the UK or France tho ).
Based on what I see on English TV, the English like Canadians a lot. And
But according to the program I watched, they aren't to fond of American's. Tho, they didn't survey everyone in the entire country but out of the thousands surveyed, I think they said something like 95% of English people would rather visit Canada and hangout with Canadians than the US or Americans (for many reasons). If the doc/show comes on again, I will write down the name of it (as no doubt someone is going to accuse me lying).
It's sad tho, cause many Americans are really nice people. Very friendly and helpful.
