|
 |
Now i've ordered my water cooling setup, i want to enhance my graphic's, should i SLI 8800gt's with aftermarket cooling, or grab a EVGA 285, playing fallout 3 at the moment, the price gap is pretty big, but i want to get it right, or should i save my cash, and go for the GTX 300 range?
My resolution is 1680x1050 but i'll be moving to 1900x1200 aswell next moth on a new monitor.

cant tell u about sli but my 285 is fricken sweet... my res is 2560x1600, and its handled all the recent releases (fear 2, hawx demo, burnout, fallout 3, etc...) beautifully with everything maxed out.

I've heard alot of good thing's about the 285, i just wanted to see if anyone else had one, if they would recommend it, to see if it was worth the £300.

i wouldnt get any SLI CrossFire or X2 videocard setup, if a game requires that kind of speed something is wrong....
get a GTX285 or a 4870 1GB, depending on much you want to spent

Well, i don't mind spending £300+ on a video card, aslong as it's going to last me maybe 1-2 year's.

LoL at ignorance, especially at the 30"+ and high-end 26" monitors' resolutions.

depends on what you mean with last, in my opinion its never a good choice to go for the most expensive one, cause you never need the most expensive to play at max settings.
No card sold now will be better than the midrange or even on par with it.
I say buy a 200 pounds card now, and use the money saved to buy another 200pounds card in 2 years.
but if you really have the money to throw at it, ignore my above comment.

im playing at 1920*1200 res any game on max setting with AA and AF enabled with a 4870 1GB .
So i dont see why it wouldnt be possible at even higher resolutions, and if so im not buying a card almost double the price for one game.
Not to mention who has a 30inch screen with 2600* res?
I said dont get SLI crossfire or X2 cause they never go without issues( besides the heft price), with a single card setup i havent had a driver issue in 8 years.
No need to justify your 4870x2

1920x1200 is hardly high resolution anymore. People are running games on three 1920x1200 these days, or on two 2560x1600 monitors, and at these resolution you just can't get proper framerates on newer games on single GPU solutions. I'm not saying I use my card for such monitors, I just show you there is real need for these cards.

No point in arguing over this after such a comment. Same was when Glottis said no used WS monitors 2-3 years ago.

Then you need to quit browsing tech forums natan, check out the steam stats , 1280* and 1600* and even 1024* are the most played resolutiosn by a WIDE margin
1920* is the upcomming resolution, and single 4870 1gb can handle it all.
but its his money and his choice, have fun with whatever you buy.

I'd like to point out "never go without issues" is a broad exaggeration. And for someone who tells others not to browse forums for circumstantial evidence, you seem to be doing the exact same. My crossfire setup has been pretty flawless ever since I added on the second card relatively cheap. About the only games with issues are oldies like JA2 and Torment, and then I just switch to one card, switching back when playing modern games.

I've always thought dual cards suck. But then you convinced me with your 53" monitors and 5-digit resolutions.
And really cool to play on 2 monitors, so you can play while you play.
Excuse me, I have to go spend some money now.
P.S.: Steam statistics are facts, they're not "forums".

Is the GTX300 line supposed to be DX11 or just a performance boost?

Single card route vs dual card solution any day of the week. Especially in this case.
And yes I'd reserve from getting anything beyond a 4870/260 unless you play on a 30". Otherwise even my old 4850 played games fine on a 24". I'm not a fan of running anything above 4xAA though as the performance hit is no where near proportional to the eye-candy so yeah.

Think i'm going to go with the EVGA SSC 285, payday in a few day's, so i'm looking forward to fallout 3 on ultra without having to drop the AA down, thank you for the input, much appreciated.

since I play on a 19inch widescreen at 1440x900 resolution. and I did a benchmark with a 260 then did the same benchmark with a 285, the results would be the same because I'm not playing on a 30" monitor?

The majority of games will play identically smooth on both cards at that resolution and you'll see more of a CPU bottleneck. I'd imagine even with 8xAA you'd still get similar performace between them. You'll see the card stretch it's legs at 1920x1200+ with AA.
A 285 on a 19' is a total waste which is why I can't recall any publication reviewing that card below a 22". And remember that 1440x900 is actually less demanding then 1280x1024.
For that resolution I'd stick with a 4850 (or whatever refresh is coming next month) for $125 and you'd still play super smooth with AA.
