No, according to posts on the Gothic boards - it happens on nVidia cards too. Oh and the GTX-260 isn't faster than the 4870 (not even the c216 version) - it's just that some games are optimised for nVidia and not ATi Sad

Well thanx, i thought it was the gfx's card. I've to investigate further on but it was the flickering and some reviews at tweakers.net and tom's hardware what did me say so. And the lack of nvidia's physics.

Yeah, that's a kicker Sad I was hoping something would come of that old "PhysX on ATi" hack ... but nothing ever did and the project seems to have just been forgotten about (if, indeed, it was ever genuine anyway)

It's the very nature of PC gaming; some games prefer one set of hardware while others prefer another.

Tehehe, less bias more facts:

The results speak for themselves, out of the 6 titles that we have shown you today, NVIDIA was able to pull ahead on the vast majority with it's GTX 260 core 216 (with regular clock frequencies). It's very typical for NVIDIA as usually, after half a year when you compare the numbers among driver releases, they roughly tweak out another 10% maybe 15% performance.

Actually mate, the 1.7 CP came out two days ago .. but it's cool Smile

As far as save-game compatibility goes, I really don't know. Given how many fixes have been done in this release, it's probably safe to assume your old saves won't work - or if they do, you could run into issues.

Thanx Glottis, this review tells a lot i think and they didn't even mention the advantage of nvidia's physics. ( obviously ) I only wonder how the latest 9.3 driver from ati performs against the 182.42 driver from nvidia with these cards Very Happy

As I said before; certain games are optimised for nVidia (TWIMTBP incentive program for developers, it's just a shame ATi doesn't have something similar) - and some games are more suited to ATi cards.

Here's ANOTHER look;

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3408&p=1

Out of 7 games, ATi won 3 - nVidia won 3 and they were tied for the seventh.

Besides, this is all moot anyway. You get what you want and that's all there is to it, right? Nobody can say "don't get that!!!11" - it's all down to both personal preference and per-game basis. Each card is spectacular in its own right - and they're both priced extremely competitively now.

Just get which one appeals to you more and have fun! ^_^

(oh and that article is comparing the c216 to the 512MB 4870, not the 1GB model)

=Edit=

Updated Anandtech article for the 1GB 4870. Note I am NOT trying to sway the argument, merely offering a different perspective (and there is no bias either, I chose ATi over nVidia as a moral choice. I dislike nVidia's business practice of rebadging older cards and selling them as "new" models at price premiums)

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3415&p=8

=Edit v2=

This is my final post, in this thread, on this matter. I'm not getting another "off-topic!11!!!zomg111!!!" ban again Rolling Eyes If you want to debate the merits and demerits of each card, let's set up a thread in the Tech section.

List of all known information about the Patch 1.70 until now:

Estimated release date in march (when there will be no heavy problems again)
Patch is only for original Gothic 3, not for the add-on
Size: between 800-1000MB
Contain all previous patch versions, including Patch 1.12
Patch can installed over each version (but it is recommendable to make a complete new Gothic 3 installation)
installed modifications must delete (or make a backup) before installing the patch because modifications will be not compatible with the Patch 1.70
Patch is for all languages
Begin a new game is a must
Savegames from version 1.60 and before are not compatible and will be not shown in the menu
around 700 changelog entries (with every small changes and world changes there are several thousands bugfixes)
Sword sound, weather sounds
Alternative Balancing (changes at items like weapons, armors, perks, magic etc.); can be switched on/off but after that restart the game; this balancing replaces not the original fight system but it is only alternative
Hero can attack by 1-3 enemies in melee fight at the same time (depend on the difficulty); work only with activated alternave balancing
new AI (new melee fight system); can also be switched on/off; opponents are much smarter and better
increase performance (depend of the computer of the player)
Release of Humanforce's quest package later (first in German, later in English)

From that i take it saves from 1.12 wont work, dang. Sad

Anyway the game is playing well now, and is so huge, that when i finish this the new gothic in the oven is allready out Very Happy

Could someone tell me a good place to buy a downloadable copy of this game that would work with the community patch? Direct2drive copies are notorious as being difficult to modify, plus it costs way to much off them.

Shouldn't matter which version you use as the EXE is overwritten with a non-protected one, assuming the D2D version is detected and possible to install over of course but it shoul be. Smile

how's the map with this latest patch? are there quest markers on it?
i'm asking because last time i tried g3, i couldn't find shit. finding a location needed for completing a quest meant i had to walk around randomly until i stumbled upon it.

nop, no markers, i'm currently using a mod that changes the map, with markers for the main quest items and locations only
gothic 3 in-game-map -> http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=114 -> rename the file from gui.p02 to gui.p00 and drop it in the data folder
oh and after 12 hours of continuous play and intensive alt-tabing i finnaly got a ctd ..sigh

are the new markers permanent or do they appear after you get the related quest?

so the secondary quests have still only vaguely described locations ? like "kill the boars from the forest"? after which you need to find that forest and walk through it for an hour hoping to run into the boars? Sad

Today i changed the earlier mentioned ati card hd 4870 for the asus gtx260 core 216 and all the flickering has gone away with exact the same video settings. So for me, it definitely was the video card what caused the flickering.
