|
 |
Let me clarify that I am joking about the death of PC gaming (*looking at u fanboys*)
Quote: | Just announced at this year's GDC, OnLive is an on-demand gaming service. It's essentially the gaming version of cloud computing - everything is computed, rendered and housed online. In its simplest description, your controller inputs are uploaded, a high-end server takes your inputs and plays the game, and then a video stream of the output is sent back to your computer. Think of it as something like Youtube or Hulu for games. |

Interesting stuff indeed.

They advertise 720p as maximum resolution if you have a 5Mbit or faster connection. Let's face it, it's a low res when it comes to PC gaming standards of today. I guess that service might interest people with 7 year old PCs, but let's be honest here, you don't need a high end PC to play any new games at low res of 1280x720. I remember my 8800GT was able to run Crysis with ultra high config at that res at 30+FPS.

This is fucking ridiculously stupid. It's not going to work. The video quality will be shit. There will be considerable lag. There will be issues due to the monthly bandwidth limits that most ISPs have in place. There will be situations where all of their render machines are filled up, and users will have to wait in line to be able to play a game. This company will be out of business within three years.
An hour of 720p video is typically going to occupy several gigabytes. That'll chew up bandwidth limits real fast, for heavy gamers.
There will be lag. There is no way to send inputs, render a frame of graphics, encode it into a 720p video stream, and send it back to a user's screen, without noticeable lag. There is no magical technology they could possibly invent to compensate for this.
Also, while I'm not an expert on the subject of business, I do not think that the business plan is feasible. Unless the service is exorbitantly expensive, then I just don't see how they will be able to pay for thousands of gameplay rendering boxes (all of which will require maintenance and periodic upgrades to keep up with the latest games), and all the bandwidth, and the expensive special licenses for the games. This makes no sense to me.
Three years, tops. This is an idea so stupid, that I'm willing to rate it as on par with the Phantom on the "All-Time Most Idiotic Videogame Service Start-up Plans." We will look back and laugh about this, as yet another failed alternative-delivery-method videogame startup.

i'd like to see that box or an old pc play a 1080p video (which will probably be the standard resolution by the time they launch onlive) +dolby digital audio in realtime
and while it may work and eliminate piracy in the process, i'm already seeing the being attacked by PC hardware manufacturers as well as sony, nintendo and MS.
but a subscription based service PLUS having to pay for your games? no thanks.
/EDITH: little math example:
they of course won't set up single, dedicated gaming rigs, but serverfarms. cheap renderfarms cost ~10-20c per ghz per hour. considering that gaming is a completely different beast when it comes to computing, adding GPU units etc, you're at AT LEAST 40c per hour. games next year will probably need about let's say 8ghz, not to mention the GPU processing power, that's 8x40c=~$3 PER HOUR. add the costs for the CPU power needed to encode 1080p video in fucking realtime, the huge fibre connection, server housing, maintenance etc...well, just do the math

that would make it even slower..
eurogamer ran a bit on it..this just isn't technically possible. Perhaps under ultimate ideal conditions, but in the real world, its going to suck.
They're only going to be able to pimp turn based strategy games through it.
