I mean Borland C, Visual C++, Visual Studio or something like that...
For Vista that is...

Been having troubles trying to install Visual C++ and it complains about Vista...

Gonna start programming again and need a good prog for programming...

Thanks...

Visual Studio, nothing other comes close (no, no matter how hard you try to argue with me on this, nothing).

Hmm, I should install VC# Express and find my C# book and get back to programming. Biggest problem for me has always been a lack of ideas on what to actually develop. Razz

Well, yeah, it is difficult to think of ideas on your own... But XNA is great fun for making games, so you can always make a flight sim or something (with Quaternion camera controls Very Happy)... Smile

Well, developing desktop applications like a mail client, or power management tools is also fun, especially when you need to study new protocols or win32 api. Smile

I use Linux so I use gcc with vim, nano and/or Kate. IDEs are big, complicated and pointless. Learn to make Makefiles yourself.

On Windows, I use mingw + MSYS.

Rolling Eyes

IDE's take away the most boring tasks and complexities and allows you to do more work in shorter amount of time while giving you a good overview of your work.

Each to his own though.

I was going to post something on the topic but didn't. Don't know why, but Linux nutties (as opposed to Linux users, there is a difference Wink) only use the most basic of tools, and something with more than 2-3 functions offends them. Have a friend like that, he some console-only Linux distro, can't stand office suits, IDEs, WYSIWYG editors, etc.

they're not masochists, i'd say it's more about some sort of inferiority complex which pushes them to try and show off their smarts. usually a reaction opposite to the one intended is provoked ( as seen here Smile ), but they don't seem to notice, at least in real life, no matter how hard everyone around them is raising their eyebrows Wink

and yeah, coding a gui in java is something i never wanna have to do again. that was my first job some 8 yrs ago and it sucked balls. i didn't grotesquely murder my colleagues, though. i quit before the otherworldly java Entities could take me over completely Very Happy

Yep, Java GUI development is awful. And there is not one GUI WYSIWYG creator to make sufficiently good and optimized code. Not saying the VS Forms (or WPF designer for that matter) is perfect, but it is leaps and bounds better than the Java equivalents.
