You can't compare any of the games you listed to D2 online though imo of fucking course.

That's just the thing though, and probably the reason why I wasn't overly keen on D2 .... it was aimed at being an online game. Sure you could play it in SP, but MP was always the idea at the forefront.
.... I'm not big on online titles, lol.
I'm not knocking the game at all, it just didn't grab me as much as D1 (or TQ/etc etc) did - and still do.

Hmm, well there's a ton of (supposedly amazing, from all accounts) mods out for it ... so I might just give it another try. Can never have enough hack'n'slash titles ^_^

Diablo 2 SP/story is awesome, man, you crazy ? Just install the expansion to bring it to the latest version and enable usage of the awesome 800x600 resolution. I've never used any of the gay mods.
Did I say awesome, sorry, I meant EPIC.

We're going totally off-topic here, but all this D2 talk made me install it again. Are there any mods which only fix things? I don't want total conversion mods, but are there any mods you guys find absolutely essential?

Definitely use PlugY survival if you're going to play singleplayer. Shared stash on your chars, uber bosses as far as I know etc.

Yeah the shared stash is superb, and like I said Eastern Sun doesn't really change all that much, just adds more. It's not a TC at all, you'll still do the same quests and go through the same areas (uber areas are not necessary to complete acts/difficulties, they're meant as challenges for adv. chars).

Best to first finish the vanilla game I think. Then you can pimp it for the second time. Just remember the expansion !!! Crucial !

I have beaten every ARPG (worth mentioning) on all difficulty levels (bronze, silver, gold, plat, etc, etc)
EXCEPT for Diablo 2, which is by far my favorite, and most played.
I'll have to agree with Sabin here on the whole MP focus.....because EVERY time I get a character to Hell difficulty, the enemies will eventually have 3 resistances....and I cannot conceive of a way to make an efficient character that is good enough to focus on 4 different damage types.
However, I did beat D2 with Eastern Sun....although it is an AMAZING mod, I still didn't feel as satisfied as I would beating vanilla D2

Not really. You can get a decent hammerdin setup for almost nothing. On various trade forums you can even get a lot of useful stuff for free.

if the new released for d3 is going to be anything like sc2, there'll be tons of changes that makes those screenies basically worthless before release and every Q&A between now and then will be along the lines of "what have you changed since the last Q&A?".

Looks awesome, but obviously the game is so far away, a lot of things will still change.
