Do you ever think they will come home?
Because people seem to of forgotten how much war destroys society.
Half of this shit that's happening today is because of war, it cripples countries.
Ever since 9/11 the world has been going downhill, imo.
That's exactly what these wars have come from, 3000 people dead compared to millions doesn't add up.
So do you think the troops will ever come home?, as i think once there all back, no war bills to pay things will start getting better.
If not, the wars expand (Pakistan), the economic depressions deepens.
What do you think?

I think maybe when our economic issues have gone to so low everyone is in dire shit street to the point of begging for help from the goverments.. And not one living working soul has any savings or money of sorts left to rub together..

Then maybe they will all return, and then it will repeat itself again later on lol.. Smile

Our Canadian troops have been in Afghanistan since 2002 ... so over 7 years now. They are supposed to come home in 2011, after achieving close to nothing since the war was un-winnable in the first place.

It hasn't been as violent as Iraq, but still 116 have died.

I'm pretty sure Stefan knows why the troops were stationed there in the first place.. why they remain there to this day is what he questions. And rightly so..

i was one of the ppl stationed in Germany with the Belgian army, which was there cause of the cold war , along with canadian french US dutch British troops....

After the cold war was over within years we brought back 30000 troops along with 120 000 family members, canada did the same , as did the dutch , what are the americans doing there ?

WW2 reason was true for only ->2<- years till 1947, with NATO we formed a shield in west germany, the threat is gone, in Europe we learned from history , and work together now, and i gotta say im quite happy with the situation.

Now the US is adding new bases in Hungary , Bulgaria , Poland.... Georgia....
WW2 amirite?

Bill maher mentioned it last week

I don't know. But they sure are making money. My friend just came back from his tour, still completely in "Military Mode" but he'll snap out of it. Otherwise all that money's allowed him to plan 3-4 huge vacation get a ways which is great for him.

I'm sure the majority will come back soon. Of course we will always be there much like our bases around the globe. But I guarantee within 10 years we will be in another war.

The bases the americans still have in Germany are, if I remember correctly, some sort of transit thingie - So when they pass through etc. plus they have reserves closer to where they're going bla bla. Well, I don't fucking know what they still do here but since they don't bother me and basically don't bother anybody, whatever.
Plus pulling them out would put a whole lot of people out of work. The people working at the base that aren't americans, the people running shops around the bases would lose customers etc.
But in the end I agree, no need for them anymore. Wink

We arent talking about that many jobs, what i mean is it wont break a community.

They behave in Germany i agree, but lets be realistic, we wont kick them out cause of "NATO responsibilities to help", not to mention you saw how americans in general react when you go as far as not agreeing with them, you are instant enemy and they make freedom fries + boycot anythign you export to them, its a small step from there to become the next Iran.
So im pretty sure its up the americans themself to decide if they want to leave or not, even OBama does the "Americans are all over the world to provide security" thing, we can debate south korea, but honestly Japan and Germany ? In europe we barely have enough military to take over someone elses border town, there is no one to protect us from cause we try to make friends instead of enemies.

I agree, but in war(imo), once war is on, govwernments have there populations by the bollocks.
New taxes, less freedoms, more expensive goods.
We have to get these wars sorted and bring them home, enough is enough,.
Month after month, year after year, prime minister after president.
They promise us they will be coming home.
Do they come home?
Never.
I hope this summer sis not as bad as what people think it is.

I can't help but feel that focusing on the loss is missing the big picture. We should really be speculating on what the US is fighting for. Obviously it's "freedom" or "democracy" but we all know that's no reason to invade a country. I heard there's an oil pipeline that runs through Georgia and northern Iraq (the place the US invaded first and secured) that I'm guessing Russia and the US are fighting over. Russia, even if just to make life hell for the US. So if we were to recognize that it is contested and not likely to be secure then the troops are unlikely to return aswell barring political and economical effects. The Vietnam war was a proxy war against China? well same deal here I reckon.

Okay, I'd be minimally surprised about the above theory being wrong, but my point is that we know jack shit and we should all just twiddle our thumbs in the dark like the politicians want us to do. All I can be sure about is that politicians make power grabs and don't fuck around, the US would not be in the war if couldn't make gains from it. Let alone continue an unprofitable 6 year old war needlessly. It's unfortunate to think that the power grab is necessary and the wasted lives is acceptable, but in the big picture, if I don't take that power, you (or the enemy) will and then we'll all be fucked.

Please correct me if I'm wrong! I'd love to have the troops home but I don't see it happening Sad
