You can start the game as either one. But, you have to start a new game if you want to switch stories. I started with Dark Athena. Luckily I am not having the problems other people are with running the game.

previous version had great gfx for it's time, unless he was playing xcox version

Or just get a widescreen monitor...
Games being presented in anamorphic (google it if you don't understand about widescreen aspect ratios), with the black bars on top and bottom, is actually great. It's nice, because it means that people with all different aspect ratio monitors (4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 8:5/16:10) see the same field of vision on their screens, whereas many games have different fields of view, on different aspect-ratio monitors.
