I brought mine pre-modded.
I install Xbox mods and have installed PS2 mods, so it wasent a case of can I do it, it was more a case of I found a site that offered Pre-mods with a 12 month warentee for about £20 more than I could mosd it myself for.
If you are confident on your soldering skills, then its a pretty easy mod , if you are not, you have to ask yourself if its worth trashing a PS2 to save a few quid on a pre-mod.

I Modded it Myself...
Took me 1 week to do it though because the site I got the chip from sent me OUT OF DATE INSTRUCTIONS THAT HAD A DAMN MISTAKE ON !!!! hehe...
BUT If I had the correct instructions it would have took 3 hours max probably less...
You Will Need to buy a 15watt Fine Tip Soldering Iron as well...

better watch out with ps2 chipping...if you have never ever soldered something before I suggest you let it be chipped by someone with experience... pins are damn close to eachother, one bit of soldering connecting the wrong pins and you can use your ps2 as a placemat....
i soldered a psx and looked at the installation of a messiah 2 (and was damn glad I didn't have to do it myself). Latest versions of ps2 (especially the platinum ones) are even harder to solder with wiring points closer to each other

like said before...there aren't a lot of ps2 versions that like dvdrw's...dvd-r goes perfect in most of em, with some versions supporting dvd+r too (like my ps2)
