I thought Intel had only just released its new line of LGA775 CPUs? The lower range Celerons and the new P4s with 800MHz FSB and 1mb L2 cache. I can't find news on this anywhere else, so can anyone else back this up? Is Intel releasing 64bit Xeon processors for home consumers to compete with the Athlon 64 by the end of this month?! Confused

Xeon CPUs are not intended for home users and they need different sockets.
Intel will release P4 CPUs with Nocona (800FSB IA-32e processors, Intels 64Bit support) in Q3.

There are also rumors that current Prescotts already have Nocona implemeted, but not enabled.

But 64Bit is still useless without Windows XP64 and no applications compiled for 64Bit. And who needs more then 4GB memory for his desktop PC? right now you have to use Linux or the Windows XP64 Beta to use 64Bit.

On that basis would you advise me to go with the current line of new P4s with dual DDR and PCI Express? The article seems to suggest that these Noconas are coming out at the end of this month, but your saying q3? Performance improvements between 32bit/64bit will only be visable once we've got true 64bit applications, but how long do you think that'll be, especially in terms of games?

Intel will introduce Xeons, P4s and other cpus with 64Bit sooner or later.
Here is another link:

64Bit doesnt mean performance improvements by itsself. It only means that these cpus have 64bit wide registers and can address ram above 4gb.

Personally i wouldnt wait for 64Bit. I recently bought a P4 Prescott 3Ghz (So478). If you get a LGA 775 System now, you sure have to pay extra for being early adopter.
So i would advice you to go for a 875 platform, wich are very mature and stable and get a p4 northwood or prescott. And you can still get a fast AGP gfx like x800Pro/XT or Nvidia6800U.

This systems should run all games in good quality the next 2/3 years.
