Doom 3 is a pretty good old school FPS game. When you grow tired of all the "next gen" regenerating health, unlimited ammo games you might want to try Doom 3 again. Just make sure to play with duct tape mod (flashlight on all weapons). It makes a huge difference.

id: Doom 4 'more awesome than Rage'
Quote: | Rage creative director Tim Willits has confirmed that Doom 4 will not only be cool - but also awesome.
Willits said that the upcoming Doom instalment will even be better than RAGE, which isn't set to be released until 2011. We'd love to get our hands on the crystal ball he's using.
"It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be awesome. Hopefully, it'll be even more awesome than RAGE," said Willits.
"For us as a company, every game needs to be better than the last. I truly believe that RAGE is the best game we've ever made. When we made Doom 3 I said, Doom 3 is the best game we've ever made and RAGE will be better. Hopefully. Doom 4 needs to be even more awesome than Rage."
This isn't the first of the Doom hype, Bethesda's Pete Hines said that both RAGE and Doom 4 will show of the potential of Software earlier this month. |

Pfff! Props to ID Software for always moving technology forward, but that's also it as far as I'm concerned...
If an awesome game=the most basic form of fps with insane gfx that demands new hardware, then I guess I'll just stick with "mediocre" games...
GOOD GFX DOES NOT A GREAT GAME MAKE!!!!

I didn't like Doom 3 at all when it was released.. Played an hour and gave up, uninstalled it and didn't think about it until a year later when a friend of mine goaded me into playing it again. This time I got further in and suddenly loved it... :S
I hated Quake 4..

couldn't get into doom 3 the first time i played it, didn't have a good system that year+ they really fucked up the gunfire sound effects. with a good audio mod and personal settings you can really sink in the atmosphere which this game is really about... a celebration of evil that goes where we go.

I think the main problem is that the "shooter-only" genre is outdated in terms of gameplay. the genre has evolved (what luck), today we have shooter-RPG hybrids (Bioshock 2, Borderland), shooter-tactics hybrids (Crysis), shooter/action-adventure hybrids and so on... I think only very few gamers are keen on playing these old shooters like Doom 3 with a new graphics engine without evolved gameplay elements. The Doom series gained its fame always from the first installment, which was groundbraking, but the sequel was already a disappointment and Doom 3 had for me not much to offer beside the graphics and some nice shock/horror effects. But also these elements have been recycled in a more effective way (F.E.A.R., Condemned etc.). So I am sceptical about Doom 4.
@dodger: I agree about Ultima Underworld. awesome games! best of these early 3D-RPGs! I loved them.

for fucks sake doom 3 came out 6 years ago and we've been having the eternal debate that gfx not equal gameplay ever since. we get it. at the very least i'd say go fuck off and play every other game then, i enjoyed doom 3 and i'm going to fucking enjoy doom 4. they still play better than crysis which had all that open-world vehicle infested bullshit people love nowadays.
and if hl2 is any proof, shooter only works fine and still has plenty of room to expand. its apparent people only care about gimmicks these days and do not appreciate quality execution.

Bioshock isn't a true RPG shooter, it's console generic shooter with some abilities to choose from, good for a playthrough, then straight to the bin. (System Shock 2 was an RPG shooter many years before)
Also, Crysis is a "shooter-tactics hybrid" ? HAHAHAAAA !!!!!
Ghost Recon Rainbow Six were tactical shooters many years before.
The only real advancement I can think of atm is Bioware's storytelling+action hybrids.
I finished Doom 3 and Quake 4 2 times each and I had a lot of fun.

I enjoyed Doom 3, it was a pretty scary game crippled by samey gameplay and crap MP. It came to life epically with the co-op mod for it though. Me and a mate sat and played through from start to finish in one night with a bud and a beer, one of the best nights gaming I've ever had.
Not going to comment and wildly speculate on the 4th iteration until I know more about it, however.

I just hope id can prove they're still good at what they do. Doom 3 didn't prove that, and since that's the only game they've developed since Q3.. :E
(Not counting Quake Live or the iPhone versions obviously)
D3 was a showcase of Tech 4 more than anything. I just hope they can go back to being awesome like they were in the 90's. Half the games I played in the early 90's were either id or Apogee (which was be renamed to 3DRealms for those who don't know)
Q1/2/3 were amazing, not as much for the SP as for the MP. Still hate their guts with every fiber in my body for handing Q4 off to Raven

http://www.gameblurb.net/news/doom-4-in-full-production-details-at-quakecon/
Quote: |
Id Software has confirmed that the highly anticipated DOOM 4 is in full production, as production for id’s latest game, RAGE, wraps up. DOOM 4 was first announced in 2008 but has been notably absent from the QuakeCons of recent years. However, ID Software may finally reveal some details at next week’s QuakeCon.
The only details known at this time is that the game will be “the best looking game id has ever made” and will be a reboot of sorts. We will have to wait until next week, although I have a feeling that DOOM 4 won’t be due for a release for some time. Stay tuned to GameBlurb for information from Quakecon 2011 and more.
QuakeCon 2011 begins next week, while id’s latest release, RAGE is due out October 4th on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and is rated M for Mature.

We'll see.
