Quote: | While many PC gamers will be disappointed by the wait, Svensson said that Street Fighter IV on PC "could become the definitive version", adding "I think you'll see a few extra bells and whistles on the PC version when that comes a little later this year too." |
Well of course if we didn't get the "extra bells and whistles" there wouldn't be a such thing as PC gamers. We are the lions and the others are mere house cats. We expect a large slab of fresh meat not some small canned shit.

Well SF2 and 3rd strike are still relevant in tournaments to this day so I see SF4 being played for a looooooong time.
Not to mention MVC2, one of Capcoms most broken/unbalanced games ever still has a cult following and is played religiously. If MVC3 ever comes out all hell will break loose.

Microsoft already announce new "anti-piracy" thingy for G4WL
maybe this game will use this new thing....
the game is out about 2 months
so there is a quite chance that until the game is out
G4WL will not be "free" anymore...

Regarding the GFWL keys, it would be very easy for M$ to log every key used from a certain date and then not allow the key to be used again on a different account/title.
Quote: | We've already been over the logistics of the key shenanigans and unless MS radically alter the way Live sees the keys (which includes post-patching ALL current games with new key algorithms) then I don't see it stopping any time soon. |
Why couldn't Microsoft use new key algorithms on just new games? It wouldn't be hard to do.

How about the fact that it is being properly integrated into an online service for online multiplayer, is being touted as the definitive version of the game, and, being a PC release, is having to undergo heaps and tons of extra testing and optimization, that wasn't not necessary for the prior releases?
Does any of that make it worth the wait? Or would you rather have had a broken, poorly-tested, poorly-optimized release, 6 months earlier?
It's so ridiculous how people thing that all they have to do is take the source code for a game that is coded and optimized for a singular, predictable, specific platform, and then hit the "Compile executable for Windows" button in their code editors, to create a shippable PC version.
And before you even bring up the argument "well, then they should have held back the console versions to launch alongside the PC release," allow Capcom's Chris Svensson to answer that one:
Quote: | The answer is the unfortunate financial realities of making our numbers within certain financial years or quarters drives when we have to actually get some stuff out of the door. The other part of this is while the PC is an important part of our business today, the forecast does not justify holding back the lion share of the revenues that comes from consoles to make it happen. |

How about simultaneous development? There have been plenty of games that get multiplatform releases at the same time.

Even with simultaneous development (which SF4 may have been in, for all we know), the fact still remains that there is a shitload more attention to testing and optimization that must (or at least, should) be paid to a PC version.
And the fact that some games successfully launch simultaneously, does not mean that this is possible in all cases. It's fairly ignorant to assume that all different development pipelines and workflows, on all different games and types of games, from all different developers, on all different schedules and release requirements, can result in simultaneous releases, 100% of the time.
Sometimes it is feasible, sometimes it isn't. I think people who don't understand this, very very seriously underestimate the complexities of developing top-tier games in this day and age.
Try to think of these concepts, applied to a different, but conceptually similar situation: Doom 3 was released for Windows in August 2004. The Linux binaries were not released until two full months later, in October 04.
Why? Not because the developers had something against Linux users. Not because they were overlooking them, or treating them as secondary to Windows users. Not because they were concerned about piracy. Not because they didn't want to get their product available to those users as soon as possible. Not because the developers weren't working their asses off.
The Linux build simply required extra work, and the delay was simply an unavoidable outcome.

I never implied that it has to be done all time, but competent software houses have managed it many, many times and there's no logical reason to assume that it's NOT possible. Capcom are a large enough development house to be able to work simultaneously on the multiplatform aspect of a project. The reason they didn't, in this and every other "eventual PC release" case; is money.
Sell to the consoles now. Make a bucketload of money.
Advertise the PC for "later" - generate desire.
Finally release on the PC. Make another bucketload of money due to increased desire and "word of mouth" from console players.

Think about this bit I added, in case you missed it:

Anyways, moving on...

Okay, you're just repeating yourself, and me. As I said: sometimes it can happen, sometimes it can't.
Quote: | Capcom are a large enough development house to be able to work simultaneously on the multiplatform aspect of a project. |
Okay, even the naive claim that "all they have to do is work on all versions simultaneously" does not guarantee that that would result in simultaneous release. Let's say you have three teams, all working from the same original codebase. Team A starts working on the PS3 version, Team B starts working on the Xbox 360 version, and Team C starts working on the Windows versions, all at the same time. All simultaneous.
Team A and B both know exactly what hardware they're working on, and thus have a singular space they need to do their testing and optimization in. Team C has a nigh-infinitely more complex possibility space they need to optimize and test for, if they want to do it to a high, demanding standard. And as they're developing an online-enabled game, for a platform that has many different standards for facilitating online (versus the singular netplay standards on PS3 and 360), they also face the choice of utilizing and integrating one of those into the game, or developing their own from scratch. They have a shitton on their plates.
It's fairly reasonable to predict that Team A and B are going to finish before Team C. Hence: Simultaneous development does not guarantee simultaneous release.
Quote: | The reason they didn't, in this and every other "eventual PC release" case; is money. |
Are you sitting down? Because I'm about to blow your mind:
Spoiler: | Everything they do is to make money! |
Quote: | Sell to the consoles now. Make a bucketload of money.
Advertise the PC for "later" - generate desire. |
You're acting as though your trite cynicism somehow trumps the realities of the immense complexities of releasing a game for PC.
Quote: | Finally release on the PC. Make another bucketload of money due to increased desire and "word of mouth" from console players. |
Heh...Even Sven knows that they're not likely to make any significant portion of their sales from the PC version.
Sigh...If I said it once, I've said it a thousand times: too many PC gamers are simply unsatisfiable. A developer commits the extra time and cost to put together a competent PC release, and the only response they get is "IT'S NOT OUT SOON ENOUGH!!"
