So,
I tried to play STALKER when it first came out and I had an 8800GTS 320 MB back then.

I really tried to like the game but it just didn't click with me with all the annoying things it had with weapons, enemies etc.

Now I upgraded my vid card, and I keep hearing that there are these mods which make STALKER awesome.

So lets have em.

Cool, i've been playing with "Stalker complete" for about a week, i think it's much better than many the other big mods, usualy their texure pack sucks, but not in this one.

Clearly one of the best games ever created imo.

How does it compare to OL?

So Complete mod is more of a graphics mod where as OL is gameplay.

Can both be used simultaneously ?

It is, for someone like me who didnt like OL gameplay anyway. Toooo much randomness.

I thought randomness is key in open end gaming? Variety is the spice of life etc..

Controlled randomness i like (if that makes any sense). Hordes of dogs near your first quest, where you're instead supposed to get scared by that one dog while running around with a pistol, ruins it for me.

I think the "a-life" rocks, more games should have this randomness of encounters + this sense of free-roaming, i hate when my playtrough will be 99% the same as everyone elses playthrough or 99% the same if i want to play it again.

I don't understand what you mean about the dogs. They're usualy no problem, it's not like you have to attack them most of the time, and usualy it's enough to shoot one dog and the rest of the pack will get scared and run away. If you see a lone dog usualy he won't attack you which makes perfect sense, but there's always this insecure feeling around the "A-life", you never know what to expect, i really like that.

Steer clear of Nightwatches NEWSA-SIMBION of any flavour particullarly if your running an AMD processor. Unfortunately they are just too buggy.

Russo's ABC mod is a good fun stable mod worth a try. Apparently Russo is also going to release a new version of that soon but it's anyone's guess when?

Cheers

I'm liking the game more then when I first played it.

One thing that bugs the sh*t out of me is the huge distance you have to travel to get back to the "Trader" in the initial camp. Is there a trainer or something that allows you to teleport ?

The best mod combination is imo, definately OL 2.2 and a bunch of gfx mods, including SkyGRAPHICS mod, Panoramic mod, Photorealistic zone, Stalker Weather Overhaul and more. Looks and plays great, scary as shit during nights.

If you're using OL, you can drive the random cars scattered around the Zone.
