Well, if this is true:
Quote:
At WinHEC we had several machines on display with 16GB drives/partitions and on those you could see there was plenty of free disk space. Like all the benchmarks, measuring disk space on the pre-beta is not something weโ€™re encouraging at this time.

Then it is sad to see the RC1, which should be more optimized, is worse in that regard. I too made a 16GB partition for testing Windows 7, and within two days, the space was gone. The WinSxS folder was 5.5GB. It has now grown to 7GB (after a week or so of use). On the other hand, my Vista installation is about 4-5 months old, has much more software installed, and the folder is 12GB.

What I meant by "issue that MS doesn't like in the spotlight" is, MS likes to brag how "the system footprint will be smaller than Windows Vista", but this will be quickly offset by a faster growing WinSxS library. Smile

Read the article again, especially the bold sentence under the WinSxS properties screenshot.

Oh, you mean this, I've read it the first time. It is true for Vista as well. I use TreeSize Professional, which knows to distinguish between hard links, junction points and symbolic links, and real files and folders. The folder is large, and is still growing. Maybe some of the files are hard links, but definitely not all. Also, when calculating free percentage of the disk, as far as I know, Windows doesn't count the hard links (as real files). When I moved my folder to another drive, I did see a big chunk get freed. Smile

Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe it is misleading. Maybe what I did when I moved the folder to another drive is move the files from other directories into the WinSxS folder (as opposed to moving the hard links). I know Windows is really stupid when it comes to handling hard links on its own, so could be that. I'm tired now, will try to look at how things are over at the Vista installation tomorrow. Smile
