So is the game a major improvement over Sims2 like most previews stated? I don't need a point to point comparison, I didn't play the Sims, just "it's alot better" or "it's teh same old shit" will be enough.

Well, still, it's not a while, especially if you have some of the special traits for smooth talking. Very Happy Hopeless romanticians, for example, can make people like them very easily. So you give a few friends "get to know"-s and "chat"-s, invite home, and then bombard with a few admirations, hugs and shy kisses, and woohoo! Laughing

The basic idea of my custom house is finally starting to shape up - just the foundation so far and very much WIP, but the basic geography is getting close. Was thinking of a huge tower with maximum amount of floors, but guess I'll go with a evil mansion/castle on top of a hill for now.

That's the biggest (60x60) and most expensive lot in town, atop the hill with the other two snob mansions. Gonna be a damn huge timesink to make it complete, but my emperor of evil deserves it. Very Happy

The building mode is pretty robust overall, only gripe so far is the sucky stairs - custom heights are a pain and it's pretty obviously meant primarily to be used inside, between floors (can't really adjust them, plus no way to connect two separate foundations).

Out of curiosity, what IS the maximum amount of floors you can have? I remember Sims1 only allowed 2 (ground and first) while Sims2 increased that to 3 (ground, first, second) -- what about Sims3?

I think it was 5 floors total - if you make a basement it counts as one. You can easily test it by making a small box with the wall tool in build mode then just making floors on top of it.

You can make pretty damn high hills too, and the height of the ground level doesn't affect the number of floors you can have (you get camera issues if the hill is high enough tho).

Whoa, whoa, whoa.... you can make basements now!? I don't need to do any trickery like having the "basement" as the real ground floor, then building the house on top? I can just cut holes in the ground using the building tools and then have stairs going down?

Had to double-check since I just noticed it when the stupid stair tool automatically aligned inside and down from the foundation... but yeah, seems so. Wink

Obviously you need to raise the ground level some for a proper basement, unless you want your sims knee-deep in water.

Fucking AWESOME! Time to create my own horror-house basement full of people kidnapped from the neighbourhood Evil or Very Mad

Is it possible to raise the ground level while a house is built on it? I'd really hate to have to demolish the house in order to work on it Sad

Actually disregard that - the ground water seems to adjust if you have a ground level basement (it's always below your basement). I think you still need to lay a foundation if you want a basement tho; doubt you can alter the ground with any objects in the way, but in the city build mode you can copy and move the houses you want.

So in theory you could move your house out of the way while you lay a foundation for it, but if you're currently living in it, it's probably too big of a hassle (have to move your char back and forth and there was something about some things getting reset in the process). Of course you could always build an extension for your house in the same lot and have the basement there.

Lots of tiny little details in this game, first image for example shows a bunch of ants eating my characters food (Actually some other sim who left it behind but whatever, it's eatable.) and the second one is some geek fight by that "l33t dude" and some other person that wasn't visible, odd names for characters but I guess it works.
(Town is a bit smal but there's a lot of little details here and there and the various inhabitants do all sorts of weird - and normal - things, like fishing in the public bath.)

I give up >_>

I guess I'll construct a basement when I build my next house from scratch as it seems to be impossible to move my current house, build a basement and foundation, then put my house back on top.

I already figured out how to do it, I just hope the same dynamics apply in Sims3 as they did in Sims2.

I never built my own house before: When I go to create a new story, I have these weird triangles. Deleting them gives me no money back, but when I go into live mode, the walls don't automatically cutaway as they are supposed to. And is building another story as simple as putting flooring down? And where the hell are the spiral staircases?

*sigh*

That guide didn't work. It won't let me lower the terrain while there are objects on it (ie, yanno, walls and furniture Sad)

None of the "boolprop" cheats work either.

*Sigh*

Ah fuck it. I'll just make a basement once I build a house from scratch.

I agree that this is a pretty neat game for being Sims, but the censor blur is a bit too intrusive in this one. I thought it was ok in the little I played of Sims 2, but in Sims 3 sometimes the whole fucking character is a block of blocks. :/ Aside from that and a few bugs I'm definetely having fun, much more of a game than Sims 2. Read elsewhere that the game resources are lightly encrypted and signed though, which might make modding and using mods a greater pain in the arse than in the second installment.
