That does not answer the question: how exactly does that fit into the way that you seem to think that this is a new phenomenon?

It's new in the sense that it is getting broader and broader. Games are released with small initial content and then require you to buy the rest (through DLC or expansions). You can give me examples from the 70s, 80s or early 90s all you want, but these are not the eras I think of when I say "it wouldn't have happened before." These are not the golden eras (for me personally) of gaming. Mid-to-late 90s to early 2000s, such games would been unacceptable.

Haha. This post clears up a lot.

I guess I can't be offended, about the whole you-calling-me-a-"gamer"-in-quotes thing, when you're the sort of kid who disregards most of the history of gaming and who considers the late 90s and early 2000s to be the "golden age" of gaming.

I've been playing games since the TRS 80's.

I am pissed because this game has only been out for a year... never got the PROMISED SDK.
One of the reasons I bought it was because I was looking forward to the SDK and seeing all the modders go to work. I won't be buying the sequel.

And I didn't play the game past a month. I got bored with the maps to be honest. I played it a bit more when the DLC came out, but not much.

I thought Call Of Duty World At War had a good Zombie game in it and was HOPING we might see something like that for L4D eventually. If nothing else, with the SDK.

But who knows. Maybe they ill still release an SDK. But I highly doubt it.

LOL!

You're a kid for enjoying Deus Ex more than PacMan, deal with it! Srsly.

Meh, s'far as I'm concerned; the golden age of gaming was the 16bit Generation (and just into the 32bit, with the launch of the PS1) So many fond memories, so many enjoyable games. SNES/Amiga (also though the C64 isn't 16bit, I'm including it anyway simply due to the sheer amount of hours I sunk into mine) and PS1 will always be the golden age of gaming to me.

I grew up with the Atari 2600, the Vectrex, the C64/Spectrum 48k/CPC-464 -- so regardless of how judgemental other people are; I know exactly what games I consider to be fun and what generation I enjoyed most - and it has nothing to do with age Rolling Eyes

Why are you complaining then? Buy L4D2, it should be all that first one was and more.

im in for L4D2 so early as being a very lame assed move. i got the first one as a gift, i was holding off cause i was on 56k and the way Steam works i couldnt even install and play from the retail disk.

bu yea this title in particular i expected a long shelf life and additional content, mods, maps, etc etc. then maybe a few expansions... it just seems like how Valve might handle it and from what i had read about it.

so announcing a new engine and game so early stinks for me, ive barely scratched the surface of the game and its already doomed...

but having said that, im on the fence about it. i noticed a uproar over at teh official forum which is nice. and lets face it, the way it can be handled is a huge discount for the owners seeing as how we are all on steam anyways, or a free upgrade which i doubt.

but yea if it goes for full retail i wont buy it for a long time if i ever do buy it. someone else mentioned CoD WaW nazi zombie mode and especially the 1.4 patch map is very nice.

It's all about gaming and L4D is good gaming. The game play is unique and fun. Sure it would have been nice to get all this in DLC. But Valve already gave us free DLC even though it should have been in the final L4D product. I am thinking they weren't happy with the tech on L4D. They wanted to up the graphics to make it more modern. L4D won't die either. It will still be running all over the world. This is a story of infection and they are telling a story. This is the first 2 locations to be played or described. L4D3 is probably 1.5 yrs away. Who knows. All I know is that when November rolls around I will be excited and first standing in line to buy L4D2.

its been out a few weeks yes
the way i look at it, im pissed about them more or less just walking away from l4d as it is, after they had went on about how much content they were going to add, but i know i will be one of the first muppets to preorder l4d2 as soon as i can on steam-i bought the first one, preorder and paid more for a digital d/l than i would have for the retail copy(just so i could play the demo early)

i may huff n stuff, but i know ill lay my cash out (even tho its kind of begrudgingly, they promised content for l4d and did pretty much fuck all) the survival mode is what is referred to as "a day late and a dollar short"

I'm looking forward to this game and am excited that there will be a New Orleans theme throughout the game.

I pre-paid $50 US for the original on PC and thought it was well worth it, I've put in at least 200 hours but probably a lot more, that's under 25 cents per hour entertainment value.

Microsoft pricing of downloadable content is fucked up. Valve has always given away free content on all their previous games over the PC. But Microsoft won't let them on the XBOX 360, this has been discussed before on many PC gaming magazines and websites. Microsoft has a business strategy that is counter productive to Valve so I guess you console owners get screwed because of this. I just hope it doesn't trickle down to the PC.

Valve always has pre-order sales and I'm sure Left 4 Dead 2 will be reasonably priced.

I don't get why everyone's so worked up over this. L4D is one of the best games in years, and I've gotten great value from it. Expecting them to release 4 new campaigns and a major systematic update for free, or even as DLC is a little absurd.

$50 for the hundreds of hours I've had in L4D is a great value (more than the fun but short "Half Life Episode X" experiences). I'm very happy to repeat the process in the Fall...

you didn't buy TF2, did you?
Fabs wrote:
when did they ever promise to release alot of new content for free?

fat ( Very Happy ) gabe promised L4D would have the same support as TF2
know, developpers said they made too many content to release it in a single update
aren't they fuckin kidding us?
that mean L4D won't have support, they released half the SDK and that's all
many people bought L4D, knowing it wasn't seriously finished yet, thinking, "hey, it's valve, they made great game like TF2 and give it a real support, not like all those shit others devellopers are doing, i trust valve"
so many people actually bought L4D to help valve, paying more than twice the price of TF2 ("it's gonna be awesome, this game is full of possibilities, valve will made that great")
Fabs wrote:
L4d is great, I'd be happy to pay for a new one come November. I'm glad they leave L4D the way it is in terms of game mechanics and put all their new ideas into a brand new game.

here is the thing, L4D2 doesn't look like a new game at all that far
what? director "2.0" (when you finally finnish your program, call it 2.0, so nobody will notice it's just a patch), new characters, weapons, firebullets (seriously, i hope it's just a feature for the kid on xbox)
and more than that, the devellopers saying, yeah, we were actually preparing an update for L4D, like promised, but we think we can get more money by branding it as a new game

this look like a FIFA or PES game, or worse, NFS, they plan to make a L4D every year? they should have called it L4D 2010, almost the same game, but we managed to work a little, so we keep the same engine, same everything except some little things, and we want you to give us 50€ every year
Cedge wrote:
Jesus christ...when did gamers all start to feel so ridiculously entitled to everything they want, and for free? What the fuck. What a bunch of spoiled brats!

we don't want free shits, we wants to finally have what we paid for, a finished game, and regular new content, like valve did for TF2, and promised to do for L4D
Cedge wrote:
I'm starting to think that, in a way, the Orange Box was a mistake for Valve.

the orange box and the low price for the separate items is the one of the greatest thing that happened in the history of VG!!
finally we had a real deal, not like COD4 4 hours of play (great, but don't worth 55€)

Cedge wrote:
Ever since it came out, people seem to expect Valve to never release anything else even close to the usual "full price." People think that they should be selling Ep3, L4D2, and Portal 2, all in one $50 box, now.

YES!!!!
there is a reason it's been a best-seller
the low price (people just don't want to sell their car in order to be able to play VG), and the great games
and the support for TF2 is what made valve's reputation
finally a devellopers that are not just taking half our money for 30 min of play and then fuck us until next release
and that's that reputation that made L4D best seller
without that reputation, nobody would have buy the game
Cedge wrote:
The Orange Box was a one-time thing. A special, one-time "deal of the decade." It was never meant to indicate an entirely new business model for them, where all of their major releases come with two other full games, for one price.

comon, WHY, valve should stop being the last develloper caring for gamers, and gamers caring for it?
WHY should it turn to evil like the others?
why shouldn't it became a new model for the whole new world (cheap quality)?
since it WORKS! they made millions with that model
and they will fail brillantly if they actually stop L4D support, and start make the same game every year, and fall into the business model of NFS and others

Just saw some gameplay videos on GT. Wow game looks like pure shit, what a rip.
L4D was never worth the price it cost and now they are bringing us another full price game which is just L4D with new skins? I mean look at the guns, the SPAS seems to be the exact same as the combat shotgun from L4D with just a new skin, same with the guns.
If they can't be more creative than that they won't get any money from me and hopefully not from many other people either.

Fuck you Valve.

Quote:

Shack: When did development on Left 4 Dead 2 start?

Chet Faliszek: Pretty much after Left 4 Dead launched.

Fuck you.

Quote:

Doug Lombardi: We didn't start off saying, "Hey, let's make a sequel for next year." We started off saying, "There's a bunch of really cool ideas. Let's put 'em all up on a whiteboard and figure out what's the best way to put these together and get them out there."

Contradiction much? You just said you started development on the SEQUEL pretty much immediately after launch of the first one. So, again, fuck you.

Quote:

Shack: What price-point should we expect?

Doug Lombardi: This is a full sequel.

Shack: So full price?

Doug Lombardi: Yeah. At the end of the day, this is going to be a bigger game than Left 4 Dead.

Fuck you.

Quote:

Shack: Are you leaving any hooks in the engine to allow for expansion in patches rather than releasing a new sequel?

Chet Faliszek: I think all this, oh, Valve's going to make Maddens every year--that's not true.

Fuck you.

full price?! wtf?!
LOL
it looks like a left 4 dead mod...

I bought Left 4 Dead and regrettet it after it took so long for them to finish it (the 2 other versus campaigns) and the SDK is still not fully released, with no support for custom campaigns existing yet either.
I won't make the same mistake twice.. Valve can take Left 4 Dead 2 and shove it up their ass.

If it was... I dunno, 10 bucks for owners of Left 4 Dead I would get it.. but full price, for something that's really just an addon? No fucking way.

Couldn't get into the first one, I want real singleplayer dammit not fake co-op, it's like Valve is in business to make mini games, some stupid episodes, even Portal felt like a small game for some reason, god forbid they should go back to making real games like Half Life 3, fuck you Gabe.

im not happy about this to be honest. i bought the first game and enjoyed it... now only a YEAR later, a sequel comes out, again to be full priced...

far as im concerned, this essentially kills off the first game (which i still play occasionally)... why would they bother adding anything new or fun to the original, when they have their sequel out? short answer: they wont.. i feel pretty ripped off.. i mean when i pay money for a mulitplayer game (multiplayer ONLY mind you) i have certain expectations... one of those being, that it wont be replaced INCREDIBLY quickly - i mean its only a YEAR old and valve is allready killing it off to replace it with a new one... fuck valve for this, seriously... why cant they support the original a bit longer, and make a sequel in 2 or 3 years.. the original wasnt THAT packed with stuff either.. i feel pretty burned by valve for buying the original, and i dont know if ill bother buying valve games in the future

a multiplayer game, only a year old... valves allready replacing it and wont be supporting the original anymore (not in any meaningful way..) - i forgive valve for their FUCKING STUPID new method of giving out weapons in tf2, but i wont forgive them for this bullshit.

i always thought of valve as 'the peoples developer' in the past... and was ready to support them completely, i really was... but yeah, i think l4d2 shows us that those days of giving a fuck about gamers are well and truely over... goodbye valve, hello EA...sorry... VA?
