PostPosted: Fri, 19th Jun 2009 00:16    Post subject: New feature: Categorization of posts as off-topic
A proposition for a new feature; allowing the categorization of posts as off-topic and the ability for users to "nuke" them (similar to avatar/signature nuking).

A major problem for users and mods, especially in the PC gaming section, is the sudden discussion of off-topic issues that take several pages, and make it impossible for those interested in only topic-related discussion to follow.

My idea is to use a check-box for each post to categorize it as on-topic/off-topic by the poster (possibly replace the "Disable BBCode in this post" or "Disable Smilies in this post" options to remove the need for DB change). This way, if someone chooses to nuke off-topic related posts, he will only see the ones on-topic.

A potential problem of this is if the poster does not categorize his post as off-topic; here the mods come in mind: A rule could be put in place, if someone doesn't categorize an off-topic post as such, he is banned for such and such period. This does not create more work for the mods, as they currently need to delete off-topic posts anyway, and the risk of getting banned will make people properly categorizing posts as off-topic.

Of course you will need to have a discussion in the mods forum where the boundaries of "off-topic" lie, like is a post like "OMG I'm downloading at 3kbps!!1" considered on or off-topic.

I think this method will save mods some work in the long run, and will help users to have a clean discussion if they wish.

What do you think?

This works pretty well on other forums but is done as a vote system.. so users vote for posts.. those which get negative votes become hidden until a user clicks to specifically read them.. Great system but due to the forum software.. probably difficult to implement.

Yeah, that's a good idea too, but some might use the thumbs down button to dig posts according to their agenda (good or bad), so not sure if it is fair. Smile

I don't like the up and down vote things, they always result in popularity contests instead of doing anything useful.

I do like the idea of marking your own posts as off topic, I'll see what I can do with that.

I agree, this is a good solution Smile

the question is, what is the best way to "mark" them? can you do something like how the spoiler tags works?

I think its a good idea. There has been plenty of times where i have felt hesitant to reply to a post because i know its going off topic. I voted yes.

But then it will still take screen space. The idea is to not have people skimming through dead space. Smile

Maybe offtopic posts can be of a different color, so others can kinda ignore them if they want.

Could also give the power only to the thread starter, that could also work.

This would be great, currently it's up to the personal opinion of the moderator viewing the post if it's deemed 'offtopic' or not.

Besides, the offtopic posts tend to be the most interesting ones, it certainly should not be a bannable offence.

Good idea Leo.

I go off-topic sometimes in PC Games when I'm reminiscing about something with someone (tho it doesn't go on for pages).

But still, I think its a great idea.

If this feature gets implemented then it will be the most used one after the smilies although I doubt people will have the self-realisation to see their posts as off-topic. A good example is this thread

http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=999675

Guy asking a simple question about amateur porn which is a perfectly valid question for that section. He gets hammered with all manner of generic (your mom/sis) insults and irrelevant replies and that is not the only problem. Most of those posters probably see their posts are quite funny which they are not.

Well, when these guys get banned once or twice for not setting them as off-topic, they will start using it Wink

Then, posts like:
Invasor wrote:
Deleted some posts. Nothing to see here people, move along (stay on topic) Very Happy.

will become:

And ofcourse those banned for going off-topic will see the error of their ways and apologise to the thread starter, the mods and the rest of the forum members, right? And threads bitching about why someone got banned will be a thing of the past. Wink

I'm not saying that it's not worth a try lest you think that I am mocking/against it. It's just that I've been around here long enough to know how we nforcers (mis)behave. Very Happy

If it's in the rules, it's their problem. If a rule says "if you go off-topic, you must mark it as such" and then there are rules to what exactly is considered off-topic, then yes, they are in the wrong. They don't have to apologize, the idea is to not stop the off-topic, but to allow those not interested in it to not see it, while mods do less work deleting and banning people for going off-topic. Consider what happens now, a mod says stay on topic, then no one listens, posts BS, posts get deleted, people get banned. I say, allow the BS, but make it hidden for those bothered by it. Smile

BTW, I think this is better than deleting off-topic not because I like to see threads full of BS, but because sometimes there very interesting/funny/etc discussions that are off-topic that get deleted.

Just dim out the post's colouring if it's offtopic, so if needed the reader can "mentally" ignore it.

But anyway, offtopic is an essential time-passing activity while waiting for the rlz to pop !

Sure, and that's why you give the option to see them or not. I don't mind off-topic, while Skypez hates it, so this gives him an option.
