It's not overrated, it's a truly unique game. Unique. As in, no other game is like it.
movie-like scenario with big prouction values + awesome gfx for its time + cool driving (especially that racing partand the chases,hehe) + big living city with cops etc + hard non-arcade combat, superior to the consolish gta
After the main scenario was over you had unlocked the "fun-mode" of the game where the city was changed and you had a lot of CRAZY challenges to accomplish and CRAZY cars to drive. That mode really was far out, lol !
Some details left me speechless, like destructible parts on cars, refuelling stations, a LOT of unique cars with good handling and the list goes on. Also, had cool controls, I was using gamepad to drive (+vibration!) and keyboard/mouse to walk/fight.
I know game preferences are subjective, but this game was a gem and demands respect ! Fanboism my ASS !
P.S.: About GoW, do you mean Gears of War or God of War ?

ah c'mon , the GTA world is just moking reality (ok , maybe except GTA IV , who partially does it) , but Mafia had a solid and believable world , i really felt immersed in that period every time i played the game .
the music , the setting and how they used the engine's lightning to give it a real and noir-ish look really helped .
tbh , i was playing GTA 3 and wasnt really interested in Mafia , thinking i would be some clone , and eventually i gave it a try expecting some really shitty , boy was i stunned after a couple of hours . usually once i except a game to suck badly it's gonna be really hard to change my oppinion , but this game is one of the FEW game that blew my expected dissapointments to bits.

Linear? You could drive almost anywhere you wanted and steal cars for ex. instead of doing the main mission definitely not the word I would use, HL is linear dude.
And even if it is a little who cares when the gameplay&story are that good, I would take Mafia's way of telling a story over any other non-linear game, the game does perfectly what it set out to do which is make you feel like you where watching a gangster movie.
Like Godfather is non-linear and the game is crap and it's repetitive.

You guys know what makes a great game??? It's not the gameplay, whether it's linear, great GFX, sound or stuff like that. All those things just add to the experience. In my humble opinion it is the "feel" of the game which some would argue is just a mix of all the above and more. The fact is, that Mafia had the "feel" that many other games lack.

Didn't think the story was anything special at all, the voice acting and dialogues were crappy too in many places. I'm not saying that most games does it better, but for some reason people claim the story is soooo good in this game when it really isnt. The missions were extremely linear, you could drive around but there werent any side missions except for stealing cars later on.. What would have made it a truly excellent game is better combat (difficult combat doesnt equal GOOD combat). With side missions and day/night cycles it would have been far more immersive and "alive" than it was. I hope it will be in in Mafia2.

I don't think fairlight is still active, not to mention the game is far from finished and groups rarely release beta versions (Sims 3 reloaded perhaps, hehe.)
Probably just a fake.

Fairlight is still active Beck. They release things once in a blue moon and usually, when its an ISO release, its a big title.
Thats why I'm tripped out you know? Let me check if its been nuked....nope, still not Nuked.....and like I said, this Pre Chan nukes almost instantly and they don't post fakes.
Its not a torrent tracker or whatever. Its a scene pre chan....thats why I'm fuckin tripped out man.
I'm so hoping its real....
Like I said, this chan doesn't post fakes at all. They are meticulous about that.
This is very odd....
Maybe it is a case of Sims 3 - RLD
Still, I will play it to test it out (gunna buy it when it comes to stores of course).
