Most likely they will add units and stuff to all factions with each expansion. They said they will probably do like with WC3 and TFT if you don't have the expansion you can't play with the people who does unless they start that up instead.

you dont get it, in wc3 (and d2 and afaik even sc) you had to enter both LEGIT keys to access bnet. And you sure as hell won't be able to use a gened key + legit expansion and be able to access bnet ... wake up lol. Hell it wouldnht surprise me, if you need the first part (but nothing else) to play on bnet with ALL races (like it was mentioned by blizzard, as i might add). The "expansions" dont add any MP stuff....

| Quote: | Will we still be able to play multiplayer matches of StarCraft II with all three races?
Yes! From the beginning, StarCraft II will be a fully featured multiplayer game, and all three races will be available for competitive play. |
| Quote: | How will the expansion sets impact multiplayer gameplay?
The expansion sets will add new content to each race for use in multiplayer matches. This could include additions such as new units, abilities, and structures, along with new maps and Battle.net updates.
|
| Quote: | If I buy StarCraft II but don’t buy any of the expansion sets, will I still be able to play online?
Yes. This will work similarly to Warcraft III and the original StarCraft, which maintained separate online gaming lobbies and ladders for expansion set players and players with the base Warcraft III or StarCraft. |

So there will be seperate lobbies for all expansion set combinations? I.e. if you have expansion 1+2, that's one, 1+3 is another one, 2+3 is a third, and then there is the base game + first, second or third expansion. So we'll be looking at like 7 different lobbies/ladders?

If they go that way they will probably have 3 lobbys. 1, 1+2 and 1+2+3, making the third expansion require the second (and first obviously).

That's still four lobbies though( one for base game as well ). Seems rather excessive and greedy that they'd do it this way, since everyone interested in multiplayer will then pretty much have to get all the expansions. Let's just hope there'll be some kind of fake battlenet for this game as well, though I'm sure they'll make it difficult.

Haven't pretty much all major developers dropped that feature after the introduction of hamachi?

Pretty much yeah. At least direct connect to ip. Im still stunned at how many games totally lack the ability to write in an ip of a friend and just connect. They wanna control and check how many ppl log in to their main authentication servers i guess..

Speaking of which, what's the deal with this one http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/
They got their own Battle.net server with no cd-key check. What's Blizzard's stance with that? Is it only up because they're based in Russia and Blizzard can't reach there? And if it's not really legal then how come real pros seem to be also playing there?

It's called private server and it's illegal. They are mostly run from 3rd world countries where Blizzard can't crack them down.

Like anyone cares really. SC2 is not WoW, where you need the server to create instances and shit. In games like SC2 and WC3, the BNET is merely a glorified lobby. Battle.NET fakes were available from since the earliest WC3 betas, and I'm sure even before that.

Well, my guess is they're considering BattleNet as an extra form of copy protection. Cracked the game? Fine, but you won't have multiplayer. That's why I think they're gonna try to make the new BattleNet very hard to 'simulate' with private servers.

Pretty much what I said myself, the real question was about pros playing there as it is unusual for a private server to have so many "legal" players or it being mentioned in Blizzard's own forums etc. I guess it's because Blizzard doesn't seem to offer ladder for Starcraft anymore so people play there for competition.

it aint going to blizzard? where do you think those keys are coming from then?
they're usually just from countries where the game is much cheaper. it's still a legit copy.
