Panasonic should be acceptable in performance, still its about which panel version he was using.
Samsung is bad compared to the performance with plasmas, same with LG.
I would advise you to go see the Kuros or the PX80, PZ80 in action. They really look astonishing and easily beat the LCDs.

EDIT:
Yea im very fond of it, but I just think its to bad to have those prejudices to 2008 Plasmas...

Well i got the tv setup and everything last night. Took me awhile to figure out how to make the pc look good on there. However, 720p rips don't look nearly as good as i thought they would. I can't imagine what standard def is going to look like. Sad

360 looks great and PC Games look great. I am hoping i can fiddle around with the settings and get the hdrips to look better. Anybody else with 1080p have trouble with 720p video source?

Why not just get 1080p rips? They are twice bigger but look much much better on 1080p.

Well considering you have never seen in action nor how it downscale the material, I take your opinion as valid as a shrimp trying to teach me how to use bicycle. Fact is both 1080p & 720p material looks amazing.

Oddly enough the performance on 1080p is kinda bad on my rig although i do use vlc and not ffdshow. Also, it's huge!!! I would need to get a handful of 1tb drives.

you need to get a program with hardware acceleration, like PowerDVD to offload from your CPU to GPU ...

And god, VLC is slower than a handicapped grandpa. The ffdshow tryouts are surprisingly fast, but indeed PowerDVD can also help. You have FX60, you most certainly should not have problems playing 1080p stuff.

That the release to try?

Also, does powerdvd play .mkv without any special tricks?

You have to rename the file to .avi to get it to play (also need Haali splitter installed). There is a really good thread on this @ avsforum ... they suggest using MPC with the cyberlink codec ...

MPC here: http://tibrium.neuf.fr/

I have an 8800 and you can't do H/W Accel on PowerDVD. So make sure that option is off before you play, or you'll get black screen

I know you can now - but i have an older 8800GTS. I guess my point is, if i can't get h/w acceleration is it worth it to have powerdvd at all or should i just get ffdshow again?

Laughing No, that 7900 is much much faster than an 8600, so he stayed with that. Very Happy

Was just wondering because if his 7900 can do H/W acceleration then my 8800 should. I was thinking it was limited to the newer 8000 series. It seems the h.264 accell started with the 8600 and every card since has had it. Including the new 8800's but i have the launch GTS.

I see an option for 'PureVideo' as well as use hardware acceleration in PowerDVD. I also have a couple 1080p rips that stutter like fuck using CPU only, so I can tell for sure it is working.

the list of supported cards is here:
http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/11036/PureVideo_Product_Comparison.pdf

And yeah, I had an 8600GT and replaced the piece of shit with a 7900GT -- there was a really big boost in games (went from 1024x768 @medium to 1280x1024 @high in most games). I still have it sitting in the case doing nothing .. I'm fixing up a computer for my sister so I'll probably give it to her...

edit: I see the difference between the new and old cards is this:

older:
H.264 Decode Acceleration

newer:
H.264 Decode Acceleration with IDCT and CAVLC/CABAC

maybe one of the resident experts can explain just what the fuck that means Razz

I think it basically means it automatically helps rather then needing some special software package to tell it to.

Well,

I tried ffdshow + zoom player + mediaplayer classic + haali splitter/matroska splitter + cccp

Each player stutterd just on a 1080p sample. VLC didn't stutter but the timeline portion of the player did not work. I am going to try power dvd + mpc tonight to see if that helps.

I actually just tried that yesterday and for whatever reason MPC seems to hate the powerdvd h264 codec (doesn't even play)... maybe you should give coreavc a try (that supports h/w decoding as well)? once it is installed all you need to do is open MPC , go to options and add external filter, pick coreavc h264 from the list and then click on 'prefer'.

I have a 12 GB 1080p copy of 'The Host', went from 90%+ cpu usage (stuttering, audio nowhere close to being in sync) to playing perfectly with ~50% cpu usage.
