I quit on february the 8th 2013. Best decision ever.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I never smoked, but it was amazing to see that my grandfather stopped smoking after over 50 years of smoking. He needed big patches in the beginning, but he made it. He also stopped drinking beer during that time, because he said whenever he would drink something the need for a cig would be too big.

Gave up over 15 years ago when my father had a heart bypass. I quit on that day and never had another cig again.
The cravings can last a long time, and they are usually the strongest in social situations and stressful times. Willpower and determination, and never try and quit if your not 100% behind the decision, I failed quiet a few times before I was successful.

Stopped for 3 years @ 40, never ever left me, never will, started easily again, been enjoying it ever since
Worst thing I ever took up in my life, and that is the best advice I can give. NEVER ever start, simple as that.
I'll die smoking because I am addicted and enjoy it too much. Simple things like a cup of coffee/tea and your meals are just not the same without one, if your addicted that is
So, started @ 14 --> 40, 3 years quit, and I'm 51 this year, think long and hard about it!

Over two years without a cigarette here
One very strange thing I noticed once I stopped smoking is that I actually started having dreams again... vivid ones at that. When I would smoke, I would go sleep, darkness, wake up | once you stopped smoking the evil spirit has abended thee!

Thats not encouraging. But I can confirm, my memories of smoking are not only bad ones, and I feel a little need sometimes, but that goes away pretty fast.
It helps alot that alot of friends also stopped lately, and that they managed to ban smoking from bars.
It also helps to think about the chemical cancerogene crap they add to the tobacco and the money they make from my addiction.

I started at 12 / 13 (ish) and stopped at 31
I just woke up one morning coughing like hell, I say one morning but in truth it was more often than not, and I thought fuck it and stopped there and then.
That was it, never smoked again bar one cigar on boxing day 2012.
The wife gave up 6 months after me too, she used patches though.
I still allow people to smoke in my house and it does not bother me in the slightest (nor the wife). Maybe we are lucky ones.

My early morning coughing stopped and I dont miss the lingering smell, I do miss the initial smell and taste though
But I am happy to have quit just to be rid of that coughing to be honest.

We should have an "Ex-Smokers, but miss it" corner
We could have posts like.
"I walked past someone as they it a first class B&H today. and fuck me I was in heaven"

I tried to start back when I was 16 because all my friends did it and it seemed the coolest way to attract chicks. The non-smokers were generally considered "losers" according to the teen logic of that time, so I went ahead. I shall be cool too!
Fortunately the whole smoking thing lasted only a month, right when my father discovered it. He "convinced" me to quit (he was..very convincing ) and I've never touched a cigarette again. Can't thank him enough
