Quote:
Boardwalk Empire is an upcoming American television series from premium cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. The show is adapted from Nelson Johnson's book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Emmy award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos.

The pilot episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and he is expected to continue to be creatively involved in the ongoing production. On September 1, 2009, HBO picked up the series for an additional 11 episodes, making the first season 12 episodes long, including the pilot. HBO has stated that the series will debut in the fall of 2010.

This should be good!

It is very blocky. The encoders used a x264 command line from the scene rules which is from 2008. Laughing Check the image in the spoiler.

Are you kidding? It was awesome! Fantastic performances, production design, direction, script, soundtrack. What the fuck is not to like?

Michael Stuhlbarg is really great in this! Loved him in A Serious Man.

Maybe I expected a bit too much, but the ep didn't give me the "wow i can't wait until next week" feeling. Don't get me wrong i'll still watch this till the end - but you could say that i'm only moderately interested at this point.
There were a couple of things I didn't like at all.
While the majority of performances were really good - some were simply atrocious including Kelly McDonald with her over the top piousness and weird glares. Certain sets felt really fake - for example the boardwalk pier. They certainly overdid the lingo - "clams" "sap" et. It may be exactly how they spoke during the era but it didn't feel authentic. And the Godafather-style ending didn't really work for me - felt cliche.

Watched the first ep and, dunno, sort of disliked it?
Can't really say why though.
I'm not giving up on this yet but I'm not convinced either.

(plus I'm somewhat happy to see Steve Buscemi in a role that is not a complete weirdo for once Very Happy )

Not every show starts with a bang, and I kinda have the 'meh' feeling as well, although having Steve Buscemi is just awesome. Hopefully it'll pick up in the next couple of episodes. Not bad at all, but also not classic yet. Then again, not a whole lot of shows do that for me Smile

You can't say anything at all after 1 episode. Stop coming to conclusions already.

The Wire started off very very slow if I remember correct.

Dunno, I was pretty underwhelmed. Pretty typical, cliche gangster fare. Don't really get some of these rave reviews calling it the second coming of film making. Granted, it was just one episode, but the first hour of pretty much any Scorsese crime film is better than the BE pilot, imho.
