Quote:
Denuvo, currently the most hated name in videogame DRM, has plans to expand into a new form of gaming protection: anti-cheat. The company’s cheat protections are scheduled to launch soon, but we don’t know what games will make use of it or exactly what sort of measures it will take.

For multiplayer, sure, fine - don't care.

But if they go for singleplayer? MOTHERFUCKERS! Mad

I'm OK if DRM companies focus their efforts on anti-cheat systems instead of DRM. Tons of MP games can benefit from that.

It will fail anyways, im pretty sure about it since hackdevs are really smart these days when it comes to get the needed info they want. So many hacks are these days external and Denuvo cant deny the read access on the RAM.

Its just a silly attempt to get attention IMO.

Process memory is hard to access if the process is running in kernel mode and any driver running in kernel mode trying to access it gets blocked/gets you banned.

Of course, they will use it for singleplayer games. The publishers wanna sell you loot boxes and shit, they can't have you cheating and getting stuff for free! Laughing

Havent found any new English talking articles but they announced it again now on GDC.

The Ones from the 1st post are the announcement, now they launched it at GDC.

Quote:
Unlike other products, Denuvo Anti-Cheat operates on the binary, not the source code and integrates directly into the product build process. It also does not interfere with debuggers, instrumentation tools, or profilers and it does not require APIs or SDKs. This means fewer tools for the build engineers to manage and for developers to install

Sounds like trash to me, how is it be able to do its magic then ?

Also seems they are mostly aiming esports anyways.

Quote:
Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director of Denuvo, Irdeto, said:

“Cheating ruins video games for honest players. This can lead to lower game traffic and shrinking revenues for game publishers. Cheating also has a major impact on the esports market, where significant prizes are on the line. It’s time to level the playing field. The launch of our Anti-Cheat solution, as well as our involvement in the Esports Integrity Coalition, underpins our commitment to eliminating cheating in both video games and esports.”

Being 100% sure that nobody is cheating would be amazing.

But I doubt this solution will be that.

Revenue effects of Denuvo digital rights management on PC video games

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1875952124002532

Quote:

Highlights
• Denuvo DRM protects total revenue from piracy by a mean of 15% and a median of 20%.
• Piracy causes mean total revenue to decrease by 20% when Denuvo is cracked quickly.
Piracy causes zero mean total revenue loss when Denuvo survives for 12 weeks or more.
• The characteristics of a game cannot explain its likelihood of being cracked.

And what ass are these numbers pulled from? Since I don't see how you could make any realistic measurement of this.

Yeah, but again, what is the comparison against? Cause games don't sell the same, depending on genre, ip, and a bunch of other factors drop-off in sales won't be the same either. Like, I don't see how you get the 20% or any realistic number.

well averages calculated from epirical data can ofc only be an approximation so 20% is surely nowhere near "accurate".

but in terms of dimensions i'd say it still serves to refute the 90% claim that Ubisoft has made in the past.

anyway, what i found more interesting was how little long term Denuvo affected sales

But that 20% is almost 100% profit, so for a publisher that's huge.

Of course, they check the multiverses where the same game has been released without D and compare with out Universe! Think before you talk!

Yeah, we won't be rid of Denuvo anytime soon. It's proven to protect the publishers from piracy and increase their income.

Just remove Denuvo after those 12 weeks then
Though I'll easily wait more than one year until it's removed, no big deal

I think its also there to appease shareholders / uphold fiduciary duty, so yeah not going anywhere.

my interpretation was more in line with toni's

if studios figure out it doesn't pay off to keep paying for D* subscription after a given period of time we might see a brighter future one day

and tbh judging by latest big game releases, after twelve weeks the releases are at least in a somewhat playable state -- pirates win

There's a price to pay though: if we're not playing the latest games at release day... how will our friends know we are cool? Sad

They don't care as long as they make good revenue. If they lost more on paying for Denuvo than they're making they would either remove it or just don't use it.

from the articles about it

" Volckmann used Steam user reviews and player counts as proxies for sales data."
lol

... , for single-player narrative games Volckmann uses the game's average active player count
wtf lol
